Help!!!!!

i was driving down the road, when all of a sudden my car turned off. no funny noises, or anything, just cruising at 60kph. since i was still rolling i popped the clutch to see if it would start up again, but nothing. so i pulled over and tried to start it, but nothing. it woudlnt turn or anything, not even a click. my lights would still go on, but not my sunroof or windows or stereo. it was like turning the key did nothing. i had to leave my car there. i went back later and tried boosting it to see if that would help but still nothing. i dont want to leave my car there! its so far away and in a bad part of the city!!! what should i do??

Make sure that one of your battery terminals didnt work loose. Other than that I dunno. Is it cranking at all?

my battery is connected well. everything that doesnt require the key to be switched works fine. it doesnt crank or even click.

Check the fuses in the engine bay and the ones inside of the car (drivers side). Other than that, I dont know whats wrong with the car :p:

i checked all the fuses

If the starter itself is not getting any juice or is not turning at all, then starter is dead and/or battery connections are not good. Get a DMM and check all connections. Check that starter is getting the 12V, main fuse is not blown, and that you have continuity from battery's terminals to the fuse box.

Check your engine key mechanism, maybe you gave it a kick without feeling it, and you disconnected the signal wire going to the ECU.

If you have an alarm which is connected to the battery, and can cut off juice to the car if it is activated, use your master alarm key to disable it completely.

Other than that, it sounds like an electrician should take a look....

how do i test the ignition switch?
i have an alarm, bu i removed the alarm CPU when i got the car, so its never been hooked up. i also get power to the fuse box in the drivers kick panel. which fuses in the underhood box should be getting power all the time?

The Ace 08-13-02 01:31 AM

In order to check the ignition system, you really have to take it off the steering wheel column, or check one by one the wires. Check in the FSM, and see which wires are supposed to be on there.

The fuses inside the car are almost irrelevant to the engine. The ones that you should be looking at are those in the engine bay. Check the main fuse first, then the EGI and the ENGINE fuse in the fuse box.

If the above are good and getting 12V at their pins, then check the starter and the alternator. The FSM has a couple of very easy tests for both. Shouldnt take you more than 2 minutes with a DMM. I'm pretty sure that by the time you finish checking these two, you should have found your problem ;)

when i checked the underhood fuses, only the retractor was getting power...

The Ace 08-13-02 02:25 AM

The retractor gets power all the time, because you may need to pop your lights when stopped and with engine off....however, if you turn the key to the "ON" position and you still dont get power to the fuses, then how can you expect the car to start ? ;)

Battery sounds good (check the voltage and the capacity anyway), but if what you are saying is true, then this is electrical. Get a good DMM and in about half an hour, you should be able to locate the problem (probably some wire came loose). Start from the battery, go to the main fuse box, then onto to the starter and alternator. Check with key in "OFF" and "ON" position.
