Headlights won't flip

just bought an fc 1989 to be exact. The head lights won't flip down . I've checked the relays and everything I have a few random plugs I have idea what they go to that have no where to plug in is there anyway I can check the motors for the head lights to see if they are getting power? I looked at them but can't figure out how to test them. Any help would be awesome

The factory service manual (foxed.ca) has all the wiring info you need.
I'm wondering how you "checked all the relays" without a schematic as the retractor relay is part of the headlight switch.

Regardless of what's really wrong with your "flips", you may not be able to test them very well until you can get them down. Start by manually lowering them with the hand knobs under the car at the head light motors. See the manual for details.

Check the headlight motor fuse. It's under the hood, driver side shock tower.

It may sound stupid, but did you check the switch above your Headlight Main switch?
it is the "cleaner switch" and it pops the headlights up but doesn't provide lamp illumination.
If that switch is on your headlights do not go down.
With that switch off though, the headlights will go up and down by the main switch.

betting on one of these being the issue lol

Ok I did a bad job explaining. As far the comp is plugged in....lol I wish it was that easy. The motors kick the lights back up if I try to manually lower them. The retractor fuse under the good is good. So that leaves the switch which I'm going to check today. However on my front upper bumper support there are two black boxes about an inch in diameter. There is a plug for another but idk what's supposed to be there any suggestions?

clokker 02-18-13 11:02 AM

I'd expect the two "black boxes" are the headlight relays, the open plug is probably for fog lights.
None of those affect the retractor motors.

provided the fuse is good, the odds of both motors failing at the same time is low, so if they both will not go down I suspect that they are either disconneted or shorting, do the lights illuminate when you turn them on? if so I would check the (4 prong connectors low in the engine bay behind the head lamp actuators) mine are white on an 87 suspect yours would be too, if they do not illuminate then connections to the fuse box in the engine bay may be the issue. or a burned out relay of some sort. your results may vary from mine.

Those white 4 prong conectors are circular? Ill give it a shot. What's the chances it's just my switch inside? I've tried three switches from junked cars and none have worked.

Redlance88 02-19-13 03:11 PM

yes they are circular when looking at them end on. if your lights are moving erratticly I would bet money on a bad connection there.

Cldmbuilder 02-19-13 04:19 PM

Try won't move at all when connected they give resistance when I attempt to manually lower them
