It has begun! Startings of my N/A -> T2 swap

Just started taking apart the T2 the other day for parts. I wasnt sure if I wanted to keep the T2 and fix it, or take the turbo driveline to put in my N/A. Well a friend of mine said he wanted the an Rx-7 body for a IT spec race car project, so now I wont feel bad "wasting" a good RX-7 :p: Here is a quick pic of it after starting to tear apart the interior for usable parts. Still need to take out dash, gauge cluster, etc...

So I decided to start from the rear, taking the exhaust off, then starting on the rear subframe. Here is the whole T2 subframe dropped ,and ready to bolt up into my N/A

Front suspension...gone

Under-hood, will start to tackle the engine removal this week

A quick pic of my N/A with its subframe dropped down, ready to accept the T2 one.

And the car that makes this all possible..my daily driver 5-speed '95 Escort, in all its 88HP glory. :p: Actually a great car, 35MPG, and super-reliable

I will post more pics as the project progresses, as well as any problems I come across during the swap. Hoping it all goes smoothly, boost is fun :D

YOU ARE AN EVIL EVIL MAN.

Thanks for the t2 frame so that i can put a great big v8 in it. I only told you it was going to be an it 7 so i could trick you into giving it to me for an even MORE EVIL purpose. MUHAHAHA.

Turblown 11-02-03 08:55 PM

Cool

BDoty311 11-02-03 09:37 PM

Nooooo!!!!

Sorry to see you leaving the n/a crowd, but if I had a TII parts car, Id be doing the exact same thing. Good luck and keep us updated.

Rxmfn7 11-02-03 09:47 PM

Yea..that N/A was fun as hell..dont get me wrong. Nothing wrong with the predicability and smoothness of the N/A engine. But when you experiece the turbo spooling up , and the rush of power coming on, its just a whole different experience.

BDoty311 11-02-03 09:52 PM

Ya i bet, Ill probably be holding on to my car for a few years until I get out of college, then Ill probably sell my baby, and get something with postive manifold pressure.

What kind of mods are you planning for her? And what are you doing with your parts from your na?

Yea, its hard when Im still in school, working and scrounging for every cent, just to pour it into the car :p:
As for mods, the 13BT is getting rebuilt and streetported (it runs now, but has 140k and is low on compression). I have a S5 turbo and manifold that is going to get sent out to BNR probably for a TO4 compressor housing. Full exhaust and fuel, shooting for ~275 RWHP. That should be plenty to hold me over for a while... ;)
All the N/A parts will be sold (Engine, tranny, header, etc..) to help fund the rebuild and stuff.

This was bound to happen when I heard you picked up a TII. Be prepared to accept the Invitation of having headaches and a good time when the mess ties Into perfection.

Have you considered giving all those parts a good sandblasting and repainting? I did and that little extra effort only complimented my conversion.

Haha, yep already ahead of you. I have access to an industrial sandblaster at my Dad's work. I refuse to put a dirty part back on the car :p: I want to be able to eat off the engine.. ( I can now..but Ill probably get sick ;) )

silverrotor 11-02-03 10:37 PM

Ahh. Keep It quite than hit us up on some pics, eh? Very strategic.

Node 11-02-03 10:40 PM

sweet, lenny it up!

Xentrix 11-02-03 11:38 PM

Awesome stuff, I guess I've done half of what you're doing. I did a TII drivetrain swap over the summer. I'm planning on adding a turbo to my NA instead of doing a full swap though.

KiyoKix 11-03-03 10:34 AM

Why God WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not another one lost...okay so it's okay Lenny. I'm still shocked you got the car that damn cheap! Good luck mang! :D

needrotary 11-03-03 12:32 PM

very nice!!!!

1987RX7guy 11-03-03 02:52 PM

Nice lenny. :)

I will want dibs on that N/a engine if you let it go cheap :D

wozzoom 11-03-03 03:57 PM

So what are you doing with your 4.3 NA LSD??? For sale? Dibs? ;)

Rxmfn7 11-03-03 04:14 PM

Thats already been sold...sorry ;)

Turblown 11-03-03 07:17 PM

I bet 99% of n/a owners would be doing swaps if they felt boost...

Digi7ech 11-03-03 08:32 PM

I'm about to do the swap as well.

I am having a hard time finding someone with the knock sensor.

I don't have a TII car to use so I'm doing it with parts from friends and other parting them out.

xfeastonarsex 11-03-03 08:39 PM

Me and my brother just got a little olde tyme omni GLHS... fast as hell, love the turbo. Now im wondering what my 7 will sound like if I ever find that breaker bar!!!

Damn. Well if the deal falls through, let me know. I can pick it up!

Digi7ech 11-05-03 02:36 PM

Are you doing the FULL swap? Meaning interior harness and gauge cluster as well?

I'm keeping the interioir harness and just modding the plugs for the idiot cluster and the temp gauge. I am searching for an aftermarket boost gauge right now. Looks like I'm gonna go with a side pillar mounted Autometer 2 1/16th one.

I already have a S5 N/A gauge cluster that I swapped into my N/A, Im keeping that in there. Yes I will be swapping passenger side harness that goes with the turbo ECU... My blitz turbo timer has a built in digital boost gauge..but I dont really like it, and will be getting one that mounts on the A-pillar.

Mark'sMazda 11-05-03 03:43 PM

I did the swap, and wouldn't even think of going back to NA.

IMO the cluster is a big waste of time, as the factory boost gauge doesn't read right after you do simploe exhust mods.
