Hail Damage!!! This Sucks!!!

I just got home to find my Vert all beat to crap.. There was golf ball sized hail still sitting between the hood and the winshield.. I need a New Aluminum Hood, a new trunk, a new tailight, new fenders and a passenger side mirror.. I am very upset.. Just when I get the car road worthy again something like this happens. Also all my spare body parts are dented like I pissed someone off with a ballpeend hammer...

Went from a REDICUlously straight bodied car, to a car that if it had full coverage would be totaled out....

AHHHHHHHHH!!! Pics up soon.

Damn man! Sorry to hear it.. You sure all those panels need to be replaced? A little bondo/fiberglass work can go a long way.

veebee 04-07-06 08:03 PM

i think this also killed 8 or more people today. last i heard it was 8. in tennessee that is.

stockrex 04-07-06 10:45 PM

sorry to hear that, paintless dent repair guys can do wonders on hail damage.

I bought a brand new accord in 2002 may and in early 2003 I watched it being totalled in the Mall parking lot helpless...

one of those inflatable car covers might help if ya don't have a garage.

Those were tornados.

Edit: Weird, my 666th post is about death! Creeeeeepy..

veebee 04-07-06 11:30 PM

yeah but storms spawn tornados!

FEAR THE HOOK ECHO... which was prevalent (clearly) during the one that touched down by gallatin!

jacobcartmill 04-07-06 11:43 PM

we got pea sized hail in bowling green. we're like an hour north of nashville though so we didnt get hit AS bad... the FC survived unscathed

Terrh 04-08-06 12:26 AM

that sucks ass!

The paintless dent guys ARE amazing, I'd bring the car to them to see what they can do before you go painting things..

lnlycrpr 04-08-06 08:47 AM

i have childhood friend that works at a body shop. his advice for hail damage is this

1. Heater Gun
2. Some dry ice

Heat the area that was hit with the hail. (obviously be careful not to ruin the paint) heat it up very well. One dent at a time.

When the area is hot (i mean really hot) to the touch, take your dry ice and rub it over the dent. Some of them will pop out on their own. Not all of them but some.

It sounds dumb but it works. Especially on the larger ones. Its much cheaper than the taking it to the body shop. Try it you'd be surprised.

darksider 04-08-06 08:54 AM

how big does the dent have to be to perfrom this? would small dents work? say something caused by a pen stab?

stevensimon 04-08-06 08:55 AM

what is hail? we only get rain and snow... i kid. the biggest hail i have seen is like pea sized. sucks guys. man that would piss me off

The principle is correct, however in practice this method of expansion and shriking is actually very ineffective and clumsy

The idea is that the heated metal will expand (duh) and the depressed portion of the steel will develop tension from the expansion and then the rapid cooling by dry ice will then shrink it past the dent and therefore near the orignal shape.

The problem is you need to heat to a point where the steel is almost red in order to be effective, and at that piont the paint is fubarred and as well, the heat needs to be concentrated entriley on where the dent was, and nowhere else....

also, how is getting the appropriate paperwork for handling dryice, and then buing dryice, and trying this half assed method any cheaper then just taking it to a body shop and having everythign repaired properly in the long run?

don't get me wrong, the theory behind the method is correct, but if you have ever actualyly tried doing this, you will know it really, actually, doesn't work. (to the extent you think it will)

RRTEC 04-08-06 09:31 AM

Pictures will be up soon. I need it to stop raining.....

jenkin 04-08-06 09:53 AM

you need paperwork to buy dry ice in Canada? all you need in Wa state is coin of the realm, no id even.... how is dry ice dangerous?

classicauto 04-08-06 10:11 AM

when I helped with some stage productions we had to have licensing to buy it...something that went with buying special effecs fireworks and stuff....it could have been that we were buying ass loads of it as well......

DJRcustoms 04-08-06 10:38 AM

I have some tailights here at the house for ya if you need, $25 plus shipping, not sure though if the N/A will work on a Vert but if you wan't 'em their yours.

DREYKO 04-08-06 10:44 AM

no they wont work on a vert. dang dude im sorry. how bad is the hood? can you use pos a dent or dent wizard on it? that hood'll be expencive to replace. and what about the back end? was the unibody part ok?

JDuncan 04-08-06 10:51 AM

You can use coupe lights on a vert, but you loose the key access to the trunk. Not that big a deal until the cable for the trunk pop breaks. Had a friend with this scenario. We had to go in from the top storage area. At any rate, if you decide you want to go that route, I have a pair of s4 coupe lights you can have for free. Let me know, and maybe we can talk Jacob into getting them as far as Bowling Green.

Have you ever tried this??? It sounds to me like you haven't. Of course this will not work with a dent the size of a pea. It really all depends on the dent, and HOW sharp or defined the dent is. If it is a SHARP dent, then no, it will not work. It is similar to a dent puller(mega suction cup), but will work with dents that are too small to work with a dent puller. You cannot pull a sharp dent with a dent puller just as you cannot pop a small sharp dent with heat and cold either. Granted not ALL small dents will come out, but some will.

Oh... most places dont require a liscence or a PHD for dry ice either. Maybe where your located might be a different story but its not hard to find or purchase.
