GTUs TII swap or TII

GAH! i'm in a dilema. i currently have a GTUs, and i'm debating if i should do a TII swap, or sell it, and just wait for a TII to come up. I bought this car thinking there aren't anymore TII stock cars anymore, and of course i found one after i buy this car. I want to get a TII car, but im' also throwing around the idea of swaping a TII into this one becasue it's the lightest model, and basically is a TII w/o the turbo engine/tranny/hood/sunroof(which i never wanted anyway). plus it has, though small, higher gear ratio in 5th. which also brings me to another question. if i do get a TII swap, could i just rebuild my tranny and use the GTUs tranny for the TII? or is it still recomended to get a TII tranny in there?

u can use the GTUs tranny and rear end. i know cake has been using the tranny on his turbo car for awhile and i recently road in a LS6 powered gtu with the LSD rear end that makes 500HP and hasnt broke yet. i think they are under rated.

its easier to sell and buy a TII though. but u have a point about the weight, and what u want and dont want

They probably are underrated, but the recommended max limit on an NA tranny (GTUs included) is 250 flywheel hp.

The GTUs isn't the lightest of the NA FC's, it's the lightest S5 FC. If you're going to change out the engine/tranny/drivetrain/suspension, find yourself an 86 Sport or an 86 base with 4-pot brake and 5-lug conversion already done. Then you'll have the Turbo in the lightest of FC's.

I did it but I knew better than to keep the NA drivetrain with the TII powertrain because of what ROEN stated.

If you really want a TII then I suggest you sell the GTUs and buy a TII.

I bought this GTUs without a motor and tranny (rolling chassis) and I had a crashed TII so the swap made sense. I swapped everything over, sold the GTUs rear end and the left-over TII parts from the parts car and now I have a GTUs with TII power and drivetrain.

to recap: If you have a nice, RUNNING GTUs then don't bother with the TII swap and just sell it and buy a TII.

If you have a dead GTUs then DO IT!

I beat the fuck out of my na trans, rear and axles, and 158 dollar ebay clutch with 13bt swap. It likes it. 1400 miles so far. Now its gonna go tonight after this post.

mods?

Pnoidrummer 09-25-07 04:04 PM

i see. thanks for the help guys. it runs. mechanically speaking it runs good and smooth. aesthetically it's ok. needs a new paint job and quite a bit of interior parts. i mean i have the interior parts, jsut they're cracked, or worn out. i checked out like mazdatrix but they're pricy =\. how much u think a 89 gtus would go for with 47k milage on a rebuild and it's all stock

dawicka2 09-25-07 04:10 PM

mods include just an rtek 1.5 , motoria exhaust, ported wastegate to negate exhaust mod and give me a steady 5psi with no creap and nice freeflowing sounds.

:dunno:

Depends on the buyer. It runs a huge gamut. From 2K to 10K (junpower's price but i don't think he REALLY wants to sell based on the price.)

It's all about marketing it right.

phoenix7 09-25-07 04:14 PM

well you're probably at that borderline. Let us know how long it lasts so we can have some sort of timeframe for future reference.

definately will. I will have to change my driving habits though when i upgrade rims and tires. I mounted my old miata tires to the factory se phonedial 14s which break lose (hopefully) before anything else for the time being. Trans also has 160,000 miles on it.

i have yet to see someone who has actually done the swap and used the NA drive train and said "omg this is terrible dont do it". people who say its a bad idea havent done it USUALLY.

Roen 09-25-07 04:48 PM

Once you start adding power......you'll see what I mean.

typing goes here cause the forum is being retarded and saying i have 0 characters with just the quote.

If I have diff issues, I'll rebuild it with an aftermarket center section and have the gears treated appropriately. I have not seen any indications of clutch slippage either on the dyno or on the street. The copper 6 puck seems to be holding up just fine. As for the NA transmission, I'm not worried really. It's already been abused a lot this year and seems to be as happy as ever.

It's not terrible....it's just not as reliable. That's all it is, an extra safety margin. You can run a high-comp turbo on an NA trans, it'll run for awhile too. It's just at a greater risk of failure than a TII motor with a TII trans.

phoenix7 09-25-07 05:38 PM

kinda like using spermicidal lube. Yeah it works but it's not as reliable as the good ol' rubber. You might not get her preggo for months but one day you might just be lucky enough to say: "oh noes!"

Roen 09-25-07 05:44 PM

lolz at the baby joke......then realizes that trips to planned parenthood are not fun

phoenix7 09-25-07 05:53 PM

:nono: not fun at all. BUt that takes you back to the point. It's inevitable. Why would you want to mess with the Type-M tranny when a much stronger Type-R is available for a hundred bux more? I've killed 2 NA trannies before and I have been beating on my TII tranny for years and I only have a bad 2nd gear syncro.

One of my future projects for my NA is to source a nice TII tranny, fly, counterweight, starter and then install it in the NA and keep the GTUs rear end. Do I need it? no, but might as well have the better tranny.

Roen 09-25-07 05:55 PM

yea......*counting my blessings*

Pnoidrummer 09-25-07 06:11 PM

have u guys rebuilt ur own trannies/engines? do you need like a machine shop to do certain parts when u put it together do u need a hydraulic press?

phoenix7 09-25-07 06:25 PM

I want to know where to source the tranny parts for a rebuild but I have yet to find an answer, so no, I've never rebuilt a tranny.

Pnoidrummer 09-25-07 06:40 PM

i see. so i've been talking to my friend. i'm still confused on waht to do... idealy i'd love to do waht u do phoenix, GTUs with a TII swap. but i have no money!! FACK. =\ how much did it cost you anyway? and where'd u get the engine from? i've been trying to find a blown motor to rebuild msyelf to cut labor cost/to learn. but i haven't found one. so i'm thinking i'm gonna sell my GTUs, and just wait for a TII to pop up. but it's rare tho an s5 TII ?? yet i did see one, but i bet it'll be gone quick. *sigh* my heart is torn LOL. main thing is, i dunno how to swap, and i'd like to mess with things already built, so i can see how it works, instead of given a puzzle that i don't know what it looks like in the end.

phoenix7 09-25-07 06:53 PM

I had a TII with bad body damage. My friend was hoarding a dead GTUs and I convinced him to sell it to me for 700 bux.

ripped apart the TII and swapped it all into the GTUs and voila.

It cost me a total of $1k to do the swap. I had no tools so I had to buy some, then I needed replacement parts. So far I'm 3K into the swap (3 years later)

Pnoidrummer 09-26-07 01:13 AM

mm i see... wel i'm gonna sell my gtus, no money to fix it anyway. i'l ljust wait til i get a real job and buy an fc again...

Boost or Bust 09-26-07 07:00 AM

I would keep the GTU's if I were you. The GTU's is extremely hard to find. I was originally planning on doing my TII swap with a GTU's but the deal feel through. If you can accomplish the swap it is equivalent to owning an Infini in america. It has the same final drive gear ratio of 4.30 (TII's and NA's have 4.10). Also the factory suspension is alot tighter than they other RX-7's. I believe it has aluminum fenders also.

In my swap I've spent a little over 2,500 but i'm almost done. All I need is a wiring harness for my microtech and i'm going to buy bigger fuel injectors and fuel rail. Ultimately down the road I do want to buy the final drive gear.
