GTUs Glass Sunroof

Are there any options for GTUs owners who would want to take off some weight by replacing the aftermarket glass sunroof (Pacific) to something lighter like FG or dry CF?

emac 06-22-06 06:36 AM

yea i just saw one recently, i know for a fact there are both options available. i think speedmachine has the carbon fiber one.

..and you should give me the glass one

He is talking about the dealer/aftermarket installed glass sunroof. This is not a factory sunroof, and will not fit a factory sunroof replacement.

Many of the dealers, didn't get the concept of the GTUs and instead saw a strippy base model car that didn't have a sunroof. So to help make more of a profit, they often took the car down to the local aftermarket sunroof installer, who then cut the stock roof up and added a aftermarket pop up style sunroof.

the dealer Pacific Glass sunroof was sliding style, was it not?

No.

The factory unit was motorized to open by retracting towards the rear of the car on the outside of the car. Mazda Finish Line Dealer Accessories did have a glass replacement roof available as a dealer installed option for the cars equipped with Factory sunroofs.

Pacific was an aftermarket manufacture of sunroofs and accessories in the 80's. They did also make a factory replacement panel for the factory metal sunroof. They also made pop ups and sliders available through aftermarket sunroof dealers and direct.

The big difference between aftermarket and stock sunroofs is that the stock sunroof has no frame on the sheet metal of the roof, the roof sheet metal itself is bent to be the frame, while all aftermarket sunroofs have some sort of frame attached or covering the edge of the opening at the sheet metal at the top of the roof.

The GTUs (note the small "S"- don't confuse the the GTU model) did not come with a Sunroof, so the only true sunroofs on a GTUs model were added aftermarket.

Are you claiming to have a GTUs with a factory power sunroof (controls being to color matched buttons on the mirror mounting panel) that someone put a pacific glass panel replacement in??? Or is this an aftermarket or dealer installed sunroof (as often found on the GTUs model).

it's definitely aftermarket and it slid (retracts) back to the outside of the car, the controls do not match the stock look at all. I was just wondering what I had in terms of replacement panels, i.e. FG, CF or other lightweight materials.

Yep, aftermarket, you can see the frame in your picture.

I would think that any shop making fiberglass or CF should be able to layup and cut a sheet for you. You'd probably have to drill a couple of holes for mounting.

I doubt there is anything already fab'd up anywhere since aftermarket sunroofs often varied in size from year to year and from manufacture to manufacture.

Thanks for the help!

The majority of them I've seen (probably at least 30), have had aftermarket sunroofs.

I wonder if these can still be found somewhere?

My sunroof panel is kind of beat up anyway, and I've always liked glass moonroofs...

thats strange that the GTUs didnt come with a sunroof yet the majority have aftermarket ones added. terrible, the dealers never understood what the car was for...

well the car bombed in the market. It was orginally slated to have a non turbo 20B. But Mazda ran into cooling and transmission issues in early testing and didn't want to spend the money to make it work.

So instead they band aided the car with the 4.3 rear end, which killed gas mileage.

Consumers looked at it, and said,"why do I want a strippy car, that is not as quick as a Turbo, is heavier than last years version (the 88 GTU) and gets worse mileage than any other RX-7?"

See; it was not just the dealers, but the consumers of the time. Only a few were sold to people that really appriciated what the car was supposed to be (hench the left over 89 stock got rebadged as a 90 model). It bombed in the market so bad that they had to do something with the left over stock.

So the dealers did what ever they could to make the car more appealing to sell their stock.

StealthFox 06-23-06 08:56 PM

wow if it had came with that n/a 20b...that would be the ultimate FC

The 88 GTU was the predecessor to the GTUs, just like the 86-87 Sport was the predecessor to the 88 GTU.

Basically they all (the 86-87 Sport, the 88 GTU and 89-90 GTUs) were the same model, with further refinement as the model aged. The back to basics sports model.

The Sport started out with heavy-duty suspension, and 5 lug brakes, the 88 GTU added the alum hood, LSD, power mirrors, and increased insulation, the GTUs added the 4.3 rear end and Turbo wheels and dropped the aero parts and optional sunroof of the first two models.

And the only two FC models that I have ever heard of being planned or built with the non-turbo 20B were the 88 10TH AE and the GTUs.
