GTUs Dyno Day: 159HP, 121TQ!!

Yo,

Well, it was bound to happen...time to visit the Evil Bitch Queen of the Universe: The Dyno. *grin*

Dana (Rotary Racer) installed my new S-AFCII and it was time to tune in what we call, "The Gameboy Advance." We went to Dynolabs (www.dynolabs.com) in San Ramon. Ray helped us get the car on the dyno and ran the machine. He was very knowledgable and fun to work with. I drove, Dana played with the S-AFCII.

Now, here is my dyno graph I did WAY back in the day:

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2552331

This was with my 6ports wired open, HKS 50mm exhaust, Racing Beat downpipe and presilencer, pod filter. 140RWHP, 115RWTQ. You can see how it gets pig rich up top and the general nastiness of the curves.

Now, fast forward to yesterday. Pineapple sleeves, ported TB, ported upper, middle, lower intakes, Mazdatrix True Dual exhaust, pod filter. Remember how I called the Dyno the Evil Bitch Queen of the Universe? Here's why:

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2552349

145.8RWHP and 121RWTQ!! Only another 6RWHP from all those mods! AAAAH! I wanted 150RWHP at /least/. Crappy, embarassing. But...I got another 6ft lbs of torque and the torque curve was much flatter. You can still see it going HUGELY pig rich up top. Dipping down into 10:1 on the top end! Okay, time to play with the S-AFCII. Time to earn your keep little Gameboy Advance. Check it:

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2552379

VICTORY!! That damn little electronic box just got me almost another 15RWHP!! Kuuuuuuuuuuu! You can see torque stayed the same, but look how smooth the curves are now.

Here is the first and best run overlaid:

https://www.rx7club.com/attachment.p...postid=2552392

You can see how much better the curves are from where we started, and the AF ratio. We tuned pretty conservatively...staying around 13:1.

For the curious, here is our settings, we really loaded all the NE points up towards the top end:

5600....+2
6000....+1
6200....-4
6400....-6
6600....-8
7000....-10
7200....-12
7400....-14
7600....-16
8000....-18
8200....-20
8400....-21

I have all the dyno runs in the Dynojet format, PM me with your email I can send them to you.

The car drives WAY better! Some serious pull up top, I'm totally stoked. I can't believe how well that little S-AFCII did! From dissapointment to stokedness with a few presses of the button.

Props to Dana (Rotary Racer), I might own the car, but it is his too.

Lemme know what you guys think!

i new to the site. what kind of set up are you running..meaning..n/a 13b right? stock ports? or what kind of porting. i like how it pulls hard til 8 g's
let me know my FC is running like shit

86gxlsp 01-15-04 09:21 PM

nice and smooth and flat

RarestRX 01-15-04 09:29 PM

Yo,

Yep, stock block 13B. No porting, just every bolt on except a stand alone! We also didn't mess with the timing, this is stock timing.

Also, we didn't change the oil, or plugs. Just kinda "run what ya brung" kinda thing.

Go little 13B!

do you think a S-AFCII would make emissions very bad? would i still be able to pass with it? i hope so :(

86gxlsp 01-15-04 09:42 PM

well im very impressed with your dyno pulls
my props to you my friend!!

ponykiller 01-15-04 09:47 PM

Actually, an SAFCII properly tuned will give you a better chance of passing emissions. Some people with Haltechs that I know of will drive to the emissions tester, then load a map to the Haltech that is so extremely lean the car barely runs. This way they can pass emissions without any catalysts.

Sideways7 01-15-04 09:54 PM

I would think that using the S-AFC to lean out the mixtures would help emmisions, since theres less gas burned (or unburned).
I need to get my car to the dyno sometime. Im thinking I might need to get something like a S-AFC. Are there any ways to tell if you're running rich other than a gauge? Also, are there any dynos I could go to in texas other than Pro Tech in Austin? I'm seriously pissed at them, and I'd prefer not to have anything to do with them ever again.

ddub 01-15-04 10:00 PM

Oh jeez, im dumb... I can always turn it back to stock for the emissions test right? with the S-AFCII is there a way to store settings? like have a dyno tuned setting and then the stock setting to pass emissions? or do you just have to like write it down and remember what they are for the dyno tuned one, and turn everything back to 0 for emissions? also, i was told by my muffler shop that running too rich will burn up the cat, i wasnt sure about this, but anyways i have a bonez high flow cat, if i have a properly dyno tuned S-AFCII will i be running too rich and hurt the cat ??

86gxlsp 01-15-04 10:25 PM

in your opinion rarestrx, and all you other fc'ers...is the S-AFCll worth it? my fc needs to be tuned big time!! im running a 13b street port....and its just margianlly faster then my cousin's rx non-ported. the thing is i want to get my shit sorted out and then turbocharge. but i like your dyno pulls. i wonder what i can pull with a properly tuned sp 13b?

Sideways7 01-15-04 10:32 PM

Good question. Im sure my car needs to be tuned as well. Unfortunately, I have no money, and once I do it will go to pay back my parents for the money I loaned from them for other stuff Ive done to my car. Does tuning it properly improve gas milage? I would think so, but I dont know a whole lot about this stuff.

MtnRacer 01-15-04 10:42 PM

Congrats Kevin! I know it's been a long and arduous journey! Dude, I can't wait to see what she does with a little street portseying. :D But for now, be proud!

I get a ride in it on Saturday, right?? ;)

Steve

86gxlsp 01-15-04 10:51 PM

damn i want a ride!
oh wait im on the other side of the continent
oh well

Slammedblk7 01-15-04 10:53 PM

dammit 9 more RWHP then my old engine !!!
sux though i didnt really get to tune mine, i just had 3 pulls and that was it...i wish i woulda had a WB

Ahtasham 01-15-04 10:54 PM

WOW, I should really get me safc tuned. I want those extra horsies!

86gxlsp 01-15-04 10:55 PM

mee tooo

13bpower 01-15-04 11:05 PM

Add the SAFCII to the essential N/A mod list. That is amazing. 14 rwhp on a N/A from tuning. congrats!

Rpeck 01-15-04 11:26 PM

Looks great Kevin, congrads! All set for the drift event now eh? :D

pp13bnos 01-15-04 11:37 PM

Nice numbers Kevin. Getting closer to my old numbers. :) CJ

jacobcartmill 01-16-04 12:15 AM

wow, 15 whp seems like quite a jump for an NA. i wonder how much an safc could get a turboII...

RETed 01-16-04 12:28 AM

You running a larger fuel pump or some bigger secondaries?
The first new graph showed a big drop in power and lots of misfires!
Nice to see everything smoothed out nicely!

I've seen turbos gain 20+hp with an AFC, right boosted1205? :D

makes me wish i could afford parts...

the dyno sheet says 3rd gear, is that closer to 1:1 than 4th in our cars?

pp13bnos 01-16-04 08:47 AM

No, but its just a little easier on the motor. A 4th gear run to 8,500+rpms takes a long time. :) CJ

projekt 01-16-04 08:51 AM

i suppose your right, i didn't think about that

too bad we don't have hair dryers...

Rotary Racer 01-16-04 10:23 AM

Guess I should step in and put my name in here :). Let me see if I can answer some of these questions.

86gxlsp: It is a stock port motor with the mods that are listed above the dyno graph.

DDuB: It all depends on how the S-AFC is tuned. In our case we actually leaned out the fuel mixture so he is producing less un-burnt fuel. But then again we taylor the fuel curve at the high RPM points the smog tests around here don’t test at those RPM’s so his tests will show the same as stock. For you other question the S-AFCII has two maps you can store. You can have one map with all your settings for performance and another map either with no settings (making the fuel curve stock) or with special “smog” settings hehe :).

Pp13bnos: Were getting there on your #’s remember this is a stock port motor. Wait till I rebuild a motor with a street port for him then we will be flying :).

RETed: It’s interesting you ask that cause he is running the stock pump and the stock injectors (clean, fixed, and bench flow checked) but yet its running richer than I would expect. I am not sure about the misfires I was looking at that with one eyebrow up at the dyno, but once we started dialing it in with the S-AFC everything seemed to smoothen out.

To be honest I think I might have ported out the upper, middle, and lower intake to much. I think the bolt on set up is going to work very well with a street ported motor. I just feels like the motor is not working as smoothly as it could with all the parts that are on it now. I think if we can get all the parts to work as one we can make some good power.

Thanks for all your words this is just one step in the long road for NA performance :).
