GTU Turbo?

I've been looking to buy a car within the RX family for a while.

Found this on ebay, it's in real nice shape interior/exterior wise, except for that ugly back window plastic thing.

Here's the link:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mazda...ayphotohosting

Seems to be a 1990 GTU. I checked the VIN, and it's a 331, meaning non turbo. Yet the engine bay image shows the turbo intercooler logo. I'm guessing its just a dress up?

Thanks.

Sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum.

It's likely a GTU that someone swapped in the turbo motor, so it's not just a dress up.

On that note, it's a nice car body-wise but if someone paid $1500 for that sound system they got ripped off. It doesn't say who swapped the engine, if it's rebuilt(or who it was rebuilt by if it is) and judging by the amount of mods done to it (in general) it was likely ragged on a bit. Whatever, it's not worth the BIN price or at least I wouldn't pay that.

Yes, the VIN is for a non-turbo.
Yes, there is a 13BT engine in there.

It's most likely an engine swap.

It looks poorly done.
I'd be scared to buy something like this, because it probably has problems from the engine swap.
The oil filler neck is not a proper 13BT one - it looks like they reused the non-turbo unit.
Some of the hoses don't look like it's connected correctly.
It's a Kouki FMIC, but the upper intake manifold (entire engine?) is Zenki - so there are mismatched parts.
Is the battery even held down securely???

It's got cheapie Motegi wheels (you can get them from Summit Racing).

That stereo is just wacked - you should rip it out, cause it's just going to invite thieves to break into the car.

It is a 1990 "GTU" - it's a base model (notice manual windows).
It looks like it still has the crappy brakes - can't confirm with the given pics.

Soooo many things not right with that car.

Who paints their Intercooler Orange? Better yet, who paints their Intercooler?
Does look like it has the singe piston fron calipers.
I will be surprised if it sells for more than 2K.
Only thing it has going for it is the paint and body.
$6,000 for that car is insane.
$1,500 for the stereo? Maybe when it was new. But I would have demanded $1,500 in damages from the installed for mucking up everything in the car.

J-Rat 11-02-07 08:56 AM

That car just made me want to cry..

AUGieDogie 11-02-07 09:39 AM

doesnt even look like a stock GTU sticker on the side of the car. I don't think they did them in orange and it looks to big. I think he had some one cut some vynal ones for it.

Anyone who ads the cost of a "custom" stereo to the price of the car will never sell it. Hell the dealers don't even do that/.

i would buy it if it goes for at least 3500k, then boooom slam a microtech and forget about having problems with the swap. it does have a great body and even if the wheels are cheap they look good.

yeah, then you can have problems with the Microsuck!

I have an 89 GTU and there is no sticker on it, what a ricer.

I want to leave a question on the auction page that says..

Did you know?......

CAPS LOCK IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR AWESOME

villin 11-02-07 12:41 PM

wow. not worth that.

1-the orange is hideous
2-its a 6 port (oil filler neck)
3-idk about you guys but i can not even see a glimpse of a turbo, and if it is then who knows how long that motor would last being by te looks its been ragged.

Also noticed that the hood paint does not match the body paint.

phoenix7 11-02-07 02:23 PM

well If he sends you a better pic of the turbo setup (Make sure it's the same car!), and if you can get it for under 3K then go for it but ONLY if you're down to take it as a POSSIBLE project and you try to fix any possible problems.

I don't think the AFM is connected BTW.

shadow7 11-02-07 03:01 PM

LOL......the big sticker on the hatch is funny. poor car:icon_no2:

87FCTurboII 11-02-07 03:05 PM

OMG, what kind of idiot paints the intercooler?

phoenix7 11-02-07 03:46 PM

the only reason it would be a problem is if he sprays it on long/thick enough to clog it or if it was a nylon-type of paint or some crap like that. If it was donr right it won't affect the cooling much.

Wow, so many replies. Thanks, I know you guys know what you're talking about so I will move on and wait for better things.

I passed up a local car, a turbo FC, white, with 20k original miles, for about 12k. Thing was literally brand new, but expensive. I got an e-mail from the dealer that a mother bought it for her 17 yr old son, makes me want to cry lol. But it was too expensive for me in any case :/

Thanks, appreciate all the replies.

Interesting. I purchased my 87 T2 in 91 (92?) for $8888 with 53k on it. I cant really see that 12k being reasonable even with 20k miles. You would still need to replace ALOT of stuff, you know it sat for ever. That being said, i should would love an fc with that low miles. Shit the 20k mile swich just clicked over in the dash.

sharingan 19 11-03-07 02:56 AM

Lol, this car was for sale on Craigslist in Miami (or tampa) a few months ago, I guess the guy finally ended up trading in to this dealer. Funny thing is the guy was only asking like $5 - 5.5k for it then. He also had more information on the swap and what not.

If you can get it for 3k or less hop on it. Once you sell that "$1500 stereo" you'll be halfway to a free car.
