GSL-SE engine in a 2nd gen?

can this be done?

Bama420 09-18-07 06:03 PM

Why?!! Do you really want a distributor? I'm gonna say yes, it can work with some imagination, but I would never put a lesser motor into a nicer car.

phoenix7 09-18-07 06:10 PM

1. the GSL-SE isn't carbed it's a 13B not a 12A
2. I think the SA/FBs have different engine mounts than the FC
3. can it be done? sure, how much time and money are you ready to invest?

if you ALREADY have a spare motor and a blown FC then try it. If you're thinking about buying a GSL-SE motor to PUT into the FC then don't bother stick with the same series motor.

I h ave seen Vids of a Ported 12A-T in an race FC SMOKING V8 commodores so it IS possible.

you'd be putting a motor with inherently less power, into a chassis that weighs a few hundred lbs more than the chassis it was designed for....

and why would you even consider this?

K-Tune 09-18-07 08:38 PM

no it cannot be done because the center iron doesn't have provisions for the stock FC mounts.

Update.

Yes the Center Irons do have provisions for the mounts, but no provisions for the injectors.

so it will bolt up.

As to why?

I had a guy with a FC with a blown engine, and I had the SE engine.

Then you have the strangest GSL-SE ever.

The SE center iron most certainly does have injector bosses in the primary ports.

And it's not tapped for the 2nd gen middle mount, though the casting is there.

Whatever has been done to your engine is not standard so no, a regular unmodified GSL-SE 13B will not bolt into a 2nd gen.

NoDOHC 01-20-08 03:32 PM

That seems weird to me too, no injector ports? I have seen a couple, and they both had injector ports in the center iron, about 60° from the top of the engine on the port side (not the left (marine port), but the side with the ports).

I have 2 GSL SE engines sitting side by side one out of an 84, another out of a 84, and right next to them, a s4, and s5 na engine, and they all have the same holes in the center housing.

As far as the injectors, I haven't pulled the intakes, its just what I was told, and maybe because the guy wanted to sell me his 13B's

viperkiller7 01-20-08 03:43 PM

why?

cptpain 01-20-08 03:49 PM

all 13B's have injector bossed in the center iron and the other 2 in the upper intake manifold.

what you see on the center iron that appears to be provisions for the mounts for the FC are NOT what you think..... the mount for the S4/S5 block on the exhaust side actually mounts on the bottom of the motor and actually helps to seal the oil pan.

the GSL-SE 13B mounts are on a plate that mounts to the front cover.

you still putting in a motor that has less power by at least 10hp if not more.

if this is too much for you then just get rid of everything you have and take the money and buy a TII

84stock 01-20-08 04:21 PM

s4 or s5 can go in a first get with a first gen front cover, first gen 13b's do not have the provisions for the mount on the center iron. I had a spare 13b SE motor and wanted to do the same when I had a shot at a fc with a blown motor for a song.

Not true.

13Bs older then '84 won't have injector bosses since all previous 13Bs were carbureted.

The GSL-SE does not have secondary injectors like the 2nd/3rd gens do.

You mean "helps to make the oil pan leak".

The GSL-SE 13B mounts ARE on the front cover. They are cast directly into the cover. A crossmember then connects the engine to the mounts (which are on the subframe like the 2nd gen).

But they are not tapped.

Keep in mind that the 2nd gen intake will not bold to the SE 13B.

I'll pull them all out later, all the centers have 4 bolt holes in them, some have bolts in them...............

as far as the power being less, I am sure that has something to do with intakes, and managment...... which would have been swapped over.

as far as getting attitude with me, lose it.

the initial post was before I had all the engines in my posession, now they are.

The initial problem was solved by buying an engine that came out of an identical car. but when the engines were sitting I looked, and the both center plates had the same holes.

and not all 13B's have the injection bosses, why would a 13B out of a 70's car/repu have them

as far as why, these engines are, and will be getting harder and harder to get a hold of. So you use what you have or works, to get the car going. Exactly why my first Rx7 got a 13B.

S4 13B into '85 SE

Any issues with this swap?

RETed 01-23-08 01:38 PM

It's...not recommended.

You will need to swap the front cover from the SE engine onto the S4 engine. Use S4 manifolds and electronics.
