ground strap on shield near gas tank
 

anybody know about the grounding strap on a shield right in front/side of gas tank? well i noticed mine came undone on one side and then wasn't long enough for me to reconnect it so i just pulled it off completely. It didn't really make sense since both parts that it was connected to were already grounded. this was a few months back.

sure its for grounding? the one i saw on mine wasnt metal but some sort of woven material. i was thinking it was a safety strap to keep the muffler/ y pipe section from falling all the way off it something broke? i dunno though

Is this a braided metal grounding strap that attaches to one of the bolts on the muffler flange? If so, I'd like to know the answer myself. I noticed it when I changed exhausts maybe 8-9 years ago on my '90 GTU. Mine was broken and frayed at the end but I was able to stretch it just enough to reconnect it to the new exhaust.

It's an extra grounding strap for 1) rust prevention, and 2) O2 sensor.
It's not a big deal to throw it away.
