good mechanic for a tune up?
 

anyone know of any? 87 jdm t2 swapped in.

having some minor idle issues, and the ecu is chipped.

anyone know of any good mechanics around the inland empire (so cal) that aren't going to totally rape me for money and do a good job of letting me know/fixing minor problems?

I could suggest someone in North County (San Diego), but that's probably further than you'd want to drive.

well i could definately use a standard tune up...but the idle issue is this:

the idle is a little high to begin with. around 1000. bearable. tolerable. doesn't make it overheat so that is fine.

here is the problem: when i let the car out of gear into neutral either while rolling or at a stop, the idle will settle to around 1400 to 1500...when i put the car back into gear it will brrr brrr back down to around 800 or so (where i believe it should be if i've done my research correctly). i can at a stop also after putting it into gear and letting it die down on idle take it out of gear and it will usually stay at 800 or so.

upon further inspection and tweaking with the idle noticed that it will go back to that same high idle if the accelerator pedal is pressed down slightly. its very strange....you can't get a steady idle or hold the pedal down under 2000rpms (at a stop) without the rpms fluctuating up and down...trying to hold the gas steady below 2000rpms will get you a bouncing idle.

i have block off plates, no vac leaks that i have been able to pinpoint, and nothing really out of the ordinary. it completely blows my mind. Throttle linkage seems good and there's not really any extra play in it.

does this make sense hopefully? if you've got any ideas please lemme know. i can take pictures as well and possibly a video if that will help. thanks a lot!

Check and adjust your TPS, Check the Timing, Set the Idle.

There is going to be alot of information on the forums here for this. Use the voltage method with multimeter backprobing the TPS to adjust it to 1volt, it is probably the best way to do it. Also check the tps with the resistance setting to make sure it doesn't have any dead spots.

The neutral switch on your trans is what boosts the idle speed when you take it out of gear, but the TPS will be what's causing it to bounce around. It may just be an adjustment issue, or it may be time for a new one.

im sorry where i said "you can't get a steady idle or hold the pedal down under 2000rpms (at a stop) without the rpms fluctuating up and down" i meant purely trying to hold the pedal down under 2000k will result in an idle bounce. it has a steady idle when it is left alone.

could it be the neutral switch on the trans has gone bad? or something like that?

last i checked the tps it was pretty much spot on.

The neutral switch either works, or it doesn't. Its on/off signal is sent to the ECU, where the ECU in turn adjusts idle speed. The switch doesn't really do anything.

The TPS can check out ok according to resistance tests, but I've had some that still had minor bouncing issues at times. The idle control systems on these cars are very sensitive, so it's a miracle if you can get it to behave 100% the way it should. You might try adjusting the variable resistor and BAC screw to see if you can find a 'sweet spot' where the TPS doesn't freak out anymore.

its a jdm motor...there is no screw on the bac.

Since you just swapped in the motor, here's an esoteric thing to check...make sure the restrictor pill is installed in the vac line to the pressure sensor.
When I relocated my sensor I inadvertantly cut off the part of the hose with the pill and my idle went to hell till I put it back in.
Worth a look.
