glass pack + straight pipe = too noisy
 

I'm a noobie. I just bought my 2nd generation GTU yesterday and this forum has been extremely helpful. :)

The previous owner had a glasspack and a straight pipe installed (no muffler) from the front of the engine and this is too much "performance" for my taste. I don't want the entire neighborhood to know when i'm coming down the street. Plus, it's hard to hear the sweet humm of the rotary engine.

What's the best (most inexpensive) way to reduce the noise? Am i going to have to scratch the entire setup? I'll probably have to take it to a muffler shop, and I hate having to tell him to restore it to its original exhaust system because that sounds pricey.

Glass packs will melt from our engine temperatures.

You can put a presilencer on or a muffler somewhere along the way.

^ what he said, that glasspack is doing little to nothing by now to help quiet things down. Replace the glasspack with a large steel-packed muffler and things will quiet down.

I had that setup for a while, really liked it. Assuming the glass packs are in the rear, have you thought of getting a cheap muffler to use as a presilencer? When I put a header on my glass packs didn't muffle enough, so I got a pair of single baffle tracctor mufflers and put them right behind the header, made all the difference. Even without the presilencer, you'll get more life out of glass packs than most people think. I've used them for two years, and have been absolutly happy with them.

yea i'd say put on a muffler i have a borla xr 1 muffler im putting on mine as soon as i get some flanges to weld on that should quiet it down even a cheap muffler should do the trick make sure it's stainless steel packing otherwise it will blow out like mentioned above

a Borla XR1 will help quiet it down a bit and have a much nicer tone, i would suggest replacing the glass pack with a XR1 and pick a can off ebay that fits your liking for looks at the back, it should still sound decent since the Borla will be doing most of the work.

total cost would be about $140-200 or so not including labor, cost is mainly determined by the can you choose.
