Getting HP w/o a Turbo???
 

Hey guys, I'm new to the whole rotary thing and definitely don't wanna throw a turbo on my car till I get more familiar with the motor. What are some good upgrades that I can throw on the car and get some more power out of it?? I'm gonna have about $1000 to spend on performance work and want to get somewhere near 200 HP out of it, if that's possible? Any help is greatly appreciated. The car is an 86 GXL by the way. Thanks again!!!

You wont get to 200 whp without porting. Some would argue heavily porting. Thats way out of your budget unless you do it yourself.


You might get 200 at the flywheel with intake and exhaust. If you are oging to go turbo then work on your suspension. Nothing you do to an NA engine can be carried over to a turbo conversion.

look up "beefy N/A" thread..also search some posts by Aaron Cake .He is a Well versed man on how to Squeeze HorsePower out of a N/A..another thing,you can start with What 87 T-66 says.Just By allowing the N/A to Breathe properly will net you Around Ten Extra HP..You can get a Fuel management System to Fine tune the Engine a bit,But really without the big Bucks being sunk into your car,you will not be able to Reach the 200 Mark.That Number would require a Porting job,rebuilding,and alot of Patience.You should Start with Reading Into alot of Threads Posted by Fellow members.Once you have Weeded out all the "bull" there Is alot to Soak in.Almost every Modification that Is and Has been done to a Rotary Engine is Yours For the Taking,but you have to Search for it.good Reading,Good luck,and Welcome to the Rx7 Community..STYX!~

you might get 170hp at the flywheel with intake and exhaust. assuming the engine is in good shape...

i disagree... considering that an s4 has 145.. 25 hp can be had with a good header alone.

Turbo, yes. NA no.

And easy is all a function of money, know how, and caution. You can easily make a good amount of power with a turbo 13b for little money but blow it up. Or you can spend a lot of money with a lot of caution, no know how and make nothing. Need all three to be fast and happy.

ok so if i wanted to put a turbo onto my non turbo 13b could i just buy a kit or would i have to replace the intake manifold?

Long story short: If you cant install an engine,tranny and full driveline yourself then buy a TII, it willbe easier and cheaper.

i am pretty sure i can install all of that but would i need to with a turbo pushing like 13 psi

just streetport it, throw the turbo setup on it, bam wham. im hitting ~200hp@stock PSI. streetported, intake, exhaust.

good point, because turbo'ing your NA is about as easy as changing your oil.

I may be wrong but isn't Kahren into the 13's with the stock ports?

if you want the car to be streetable then you'll most likely end up with 170 hp. If you want to go turbo then you need to swap out the motor and drivetrain. If you don't want to do the swap then you have to make a custom manifold, oil lines, get the right sensors, fuel etc.,etc.

If you are looking for HIGH HP then do the engine swap. If you don't want to do THAT then get another car that will make 200-300HP more easily than an NA RX7.

why did you buy this car anyways?

for $1K you can get

SAFC $100-300
intake $40-150
AND/OR
exhaust $300-1100

I bought the car cuz it was cheap ($500) and in great shape. I want it for a nice summer ride and to do a little suspension work on so it handles good. just wondering what i could throw at it in the ways of a few power upgrades...

I'll try to help a little here since you are new. First, you should plan on reading a bit. Check out the FAQ and threads in the archives. I have the beefy N/A thread link in my sig.

Second, I recommend deciding what you want the car to be. It sounds like you want it to be a fun street car. Exhaust and intake are a good idea on your car. For exhaust you may want a high flow cat. The Racing Beat (RB) catback is really nice (wish I had it), but it is a pretty penny. You would easily spend $1k getting just the high flow cat and RB catback.

For intake you should consider making your own true cool air intake with the proper heat shielding etc. Also make sure the 6PI system is working (yours works on exhaust pressure). Good spark plugs make a difference too. A general tune up is a good idea, and having your battery tested is not a bad idea either. (could spend a couple hundred total here)

More advanced improvements include a CDI ($120), pineapple racing sleeve inserts ($60), series 5 VDI manifold swap, and lightweight flywheel. Light weight wheels are good too, but your stock wheels aren't bad. Some people run shorter tires like 205/55-15 or 205/50-15 for a little boost in torque to the road, but not everyone likes the look. Fine tuning the timing and running a SAFC for fuel tweaking is a good idea too.

Lowering springs like Eibach or Racing Beat paired with Tokico non-adjustable struts are nice for suspension. Also, I recommend going with the lightest wheels possible if you get new ones (16lbs or less).

PPort, it full exhaust and ITBs, with a engine management computer....oh man..a fully opened 6 port N/A....its not as good as a Pported 20b or 26b....(thinks of the 787b idle sound) BRAP BRAP BRAP BRAP...

Anyway..IHE with a medium street port, im sure that will get you around 170-190rwhp

it is the equilivent of a D15 trying to go fast.
