Gas Tank

1 Attachment(s)
I haven't opened the tank up but I'm fearing the worst. I recently bought a 10AE and changed the filter and found all this crud. I also noticed when the car sits overnight it starts right up, but afer driving it takes two attempts next time to start. I figure the crud gets stirred up which prevents fuel from getting there.

I figured I'd get a new tank (I'll open it up and verify this weekend) since the car is 20 years old and I plan to keep, but I wasnt sure what else I need? Anyone buy one recently? I did search but didnt see anything quite what I was looking for. I do know I need a new low pressure filter.

Gas is a solvent

It's surprising that it still starts and allows a better opportunity for you to not have to worry about the injectors.

1) Drain all of the old gas from the tank
2) Fill it up with brand new gas (it will act as a solvent)
3) Once you've run through a tank or two to get everything off the tank, replace the sock filter and fuel filter with the new ones that you have.

I had one that was really bad and essentially formed a rubber coating around the whole tank. I drained the lines, emptied the tank, pressure washed the gunk out, and then put a new fuel pump in.

Thanks for the info. I laughed at the 'rubber coating around the tank'. I'll take your advice and pressure wash it assuming the tank is as bad as I think. This weekend i plan to open it up.

The gas tank "insides" can be accessed by lifting the Rear carpet and taking that plate off that you see.after that you will see six Screws on a plate. That holds the Fuel pump assembly.Onec you get that off you can stick your hand in and clean the tank..Oh,if you just want to drain it,there should by rights be a Drain plug on the bottom of the tank.somewhere around 14. or 17mm..Cheers Styx!~

thank you for reading my post but
i did all that and i wanna clean it out (like thoroughly, spik-n-span or close to it!!) cause i just bought a walbro fuel pump and i need it clean to get fuel to my motor cause its been sitting for a while and i need to get it running. trying to figure out the best way possible to clean it!

well i finally clean out the gas tank and i got another issue with it.
They're several pin sized holes in the bottom of it near the drain plug and it is pissing me off! All that slugged was blocking the holes pretty good but what do i do now? i was thinking about getting it spot-welded to close the holes to get on with the gas tank clean out. any other advice would be great full

There is another thread that was started in the 2nd gen section about cleaning a gas tank. Aaron Cake posted a way to fix the pin size holes in the gas tank. It's close to the bottom of the page.

thank you for that tried looking before and i couldn't really find anything, the only thing that popped up was this thread

I definetly need a new gas tank. It was full of rust and cancerious rust too!

Question is now when I drop the tank how do I get rid of it? I drained the fuel (lI lost massive brain cells doing so) and now the tank is ready to bring down. How do I get rid of it? Best way to neutralize the fumes (with only vapors in the tank it is like a bomb now)?
