gas light

what can cause my gas empty light to not work? i usually drive it until the light comes on and i would fill up. now it wont even turn on and im to scared to drive it until it dies becasue i hear that can mess up the gas pump. is there a fuse for it or a way i can check if it still works? thanks

another question, what color is the clutch fluid suppose to be in the reviosor? i bought prestone dot 3 brake fluid and its clear. the fluid thats already in the car is really dark, like black.

If you use it that often maybe the bulb is burn't! Try using the fuel gauge!
I would be affraid to use our warning lights for anything.

when you turn on the key do all lights in the warning panel light up? if so then the bulb is fine. more then likely you need a new sending unit

yep its time for a clutch flush

darksider 06-23-06 10:10 PM

all lights come on but when its below the last line on the fuel it doesnt light up anymore. where is the sender unit fot it?

thanks for the help

Low Fuel sending unit are notorious

for going bad, especially in S5's. It's a little bullet like thing mounted on the end of a wire arm located next to your fuel pump. Only thing to do is buy a new one, and they aren't cheap.

darksider 06-23-06 10:53 PM

theres two fuel pumps right? is it located in the rear or the engine bay?

Ok I had my car worked on many many years ago (87 t2) and they pulled the intercooler and did some other work as well. ANYWAY when i went to leave my low gas light came on (half a tank) and stayed on for like an hour. Then it went out and has never worked since. It is not the bulb as it work when i turn the igg switch to on.

Sorry to thread jack.

1 fuel pump

Under a panel held with 4 screws. Remove the panel and you'll see the fuel pump assembly, two hoses running to it and, as I recall, 8 small screws mounting the assembly top to the fuel tank. Pull off the hoses, remove the screws, and it just lifts up. Then you'll see the bullet sending unit I'm talking about. All you can do is replace it with a new one.

this means i have to put out my interior huh? do i have to replace it? are there any harm or disadvantages beside not having the warning for low gas? thanks for the help.

You just need to fold back the rear carpet. Sender for the gauge is on the main sender unit in the tank. The only disadvantage is that the light does not illuminate when you are low on fuel.

HOZZMANRX7 06-25-06 11:54 AM

Yup

Just need to fill your tank at the 1/4 as you probably do normally anyway.

my gas light turns on when i first start the car then it goes off. But the other day i was driving and i need gas ASAP but my gas light didnt come on. Dunnno if i had to let it get more lower or the sensor thing in the FP is not working
