Gaijin Autorepair - a diary of the winter projects on my 1990 T2
As some of you guys already know, I blew a dowel in my rear plate last week. It had to have been detonation, but I don't know how... but this stuff just doesn't break like that, so there is no other possibility.
I've decided to pull the engine and fix it myself (read : attempt to fix it myself). In the mean time, this is a perfect time to do the rest of the wintertime modifications that I had planned to do. My goals for this winter:
Anytime that I refer to "we" or "us" its me and zyounker... (gotta give props :D) 11/06/01 ----------- Last night we started dissasembling Johny 5 RX7. Got the whole top end off, as well as the radiator and shroud, and a bunch of other crap too. Got all of the bolts undone for the tranny and downpipe as well. We were getting ready to lift the engine out, but we noticed that the ingine hoist tabs (those little loop things) weren't on my block... gotta love those shady engine builders... :) Anyhow, either tonight or tomorrow night we plan on pulling the engine so I can start to clean things up a bit. I'm plannning on redoing the engine wiring harness and just all around cleaning up the bay. I'm still waiting on pay day to order the parts to fix this bitch... also some performance parts as well (New FMIC, 1.15 exhaust housing for turbo, Fluidyne radiator, ACT 6-puck clutch... etc...) |

----------- We just got the motor out. The lessons for today are: Its out. I can definitely see the crack in the rear housing now. We spun the engine around a couple times and quick lemans look at the seals looks pretty good. So, as soon as I can get the engine apart, maybe this weekend, I'm going to be sending my rear iron housing to Marvelspeed to have Don port me a matching housing. That'll give us something to do for the next few days... https://www.rx7club.com/vforums/atta...&postid=223321 p.s. The soda can is used to control boost |

Can't order the wrench until I get the cash... so engine work is on hold for a few days. In the meantime, there is PLENTY to do in the engine bay. Over the next couple of days, I'm going to clean the hell out of the engine bay, consolidate some wiring harnesses, rearrange a couple of things and start pulling some unnecessary systems off of the block. I just got word that the FD intake that I bought is in the mail as of today, so thats a good thing. I'm still waiting to here back from Jason on the price and availability of the Greddy FD intake elbow and Greddy BOV. I'm looking for a bracket from a car that has AC but no power steering. If anyone has one that they don't need and would like to sell, please get ahold of me. |

----------- Its been slow lately, but I actually did some stuff on the car today. I went to Sears and found the 54mm socket that I needed to take the flywheel nut off. It was only $23, but not TOO bad. I didn't have a 3/4" drive for it, so I had to buy a breaker bar... that thing was $50!!! WTF! So, we get home and start to strip shit off of the engine. Got the clutch off and then it was time to attempt to remove the flywheel nut. YEAH RIGHT! GOOD LUCK THERE BUDDY! So, we don't have the air tools at my place, so we try and break it loose with the breaker bar and one of us holding onto the bolt on the front of the eccentric shaft. Well, long story short, we broke some tools and called it a night. The flywheel nut is still on there. I guess its time to bring the air tools to my place for a while :) Anyhow, I got to finally see what my intake ports look like since I decided to actually take the lower intake manifold off. They dont look so hot. The secondaries are sorta OK, but not what I would call a good porting job. The flow is all screwed up, the air comes in and the hits a slight 1/4 raised wall at the top of the port and then has to change direction to go into the combustion chamber. The primaries look a bit better, but they aren't opened up nearly enough. It kind of looks like the guy that ported my engine started to do the primaries, but gave up and just put the engine together. The exhaust ports are not ported very large either, but they look better than the other ports. Not sure what I'm going to do with the engine just yet... I know that Marvelspeed makes some wicked motors with Don's awesome porting... so that is an option... but, then there's alway the coolness and satisfaction of saying that you did the engine yourself. I'm not making any decisions just yet... I'm gonna wait and see what the intake ports look like from inside the engine... and also see what shape the rotor housings are in. Today, UPS brought my FD upper intake manifold, throttle body and plastic intake elbow. It all looks pretty good. Too bad that I won't get to put this baby on for good while since I have to deal with the engine woes for now... Today, I ordered my Fluidyne radiator from www.absolutradiators.com. They have the FC radiator for an AWESOME price of $412. They shipped it same day as well. I also ordered my Greddy intake elbow and Greddy Type S BOV from The Rx7 Store. I'm having Jason get a price for the exhaust housing that I want for my turbo, but he hasn't gotten through to Turbonetics yet. I've been trying to get ahold of Crispeed to make me a manifold since its about that time... I'm trying to think of ANYTHING else that I may need to put this thing back together. Racing beat sells an oil pan baffle that I've been thinking about. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know! Thats it for now. |
oil pan baf.
I made the baffle on my car. Came out real nice and I think better then the RB one. Would you be interested in buying one? Say $50 with the longer SS bolts
