Funny Check Engine Light

My stupid check engine light on the idiot board all of a sudden just came on. However, if I give the car any kind of gas, it will go away. Moreover, when I let off the gas totally the damn check engine light comes back on. Could it just be wiring or have I found something else that has gone wrong? Thanks for all the help

check for codes... my guess is 02 sensor code.

what year and model do you have?

Josepi and I both had the check engine light come on when our TPS were going bad. for instance, when i was going down an off ramp from a highway, and just downshifting and not pressing on the gas, the light would come on. mine got worse though and would backfire and shit. but after a newer TPS, the light and problem disappeared. we both have 91 T2's.

but also, i agree with scott...could be your O2 sensor. before i had put a new new O2 sensor in my 91n/a i had jiggled the wires for the old one to see how i could get it out. later that day when i took the car out the check engine light came on once or twice. but then it never came on again. maybe if you just jibble the O2 sensor wires the light will disappear.

good luck :)

when you had the tps light come on was did it come and go like his? or just stay on.

I'd say either one could turn it off and on. like if the o2 was bad it might be getting strange readings while crusing so the light will come on, but then when he floors it the 02 gets a different reading would be in the correct range, so the code goes away.

of course tps would work the same way as it's measuring the throttle. I think most other codes would just make the light stay on.

I am running an 89 GTU N/a

HAILERS 11-26-01 10:02 AM

oxygen sensor or related wiring. Cost 26 bucks for a 02sensor. Cheap. http://home.rmci.net/panther/ecu_codes.htm

I am betting he'd get code 12. TPS. Check the codes like Hailers posted the instructions for (great link!) and tell us what ya have.

Good luck!

It DEFINATELY the throttle position sensor.

Its the low end sensor gone bad.

NOT THE O2 SENSOR.

I have had 3 cars do this, and all of them had bad o2 sensors, replcing it made no difference in the check engine light.

(but the o2 sensor error did go away)

You are describing a Trottle Position Sensor failure.

Suparslinc 11-27-01 02:50 PM

I think its the 02 sensor if anyone cares

I had the exact same problem; check engine light would come on, step on the throttle, it would go off.
for some reason I couldn't get a reading off the initial set coupler or whatsitcalled. Unlike last time when I pulled the O2 sensor code.

Talked to ZachSpazz and went out and bought a $19 Bosch unit.
The check engine light hasn't bothered me since, and the car runs smoother now too.

check lite

My bet is with Sniper_x. If it is the sensors, I have a cheap fix we use in the shop alot. Post you findings, if the tps I'll fill you in. PS out of town for a race Thur-sun. Rob

Speaking of check engine light, mine came on a few times randomly. I turn off the car or i stop. It goes away, it is weird. My idle is the same way...
