fule smell wile driving

Wile driving the car everything is fine but after i hit a little boost for a few seconds I get this fule oder in the car. After reading some scary threads about the PD failing and causing fires I replaced mine with a mazda PD with the fule rail and new injector O rings.

After that fun job i took her for a spin and its still there. I can't see anything leaking or smell anything wile hitting the gas with my head under the hood. Its only noticeable when i'm driving it hard. Could it be the charcole canister? I get a big woooshh sound when i take off my gas cap. could the canister be clogged somehow? if so whats the best way to remove it? Can i just cap the lines and get a vented gas cap?

I get that problem in my 87 when I turn on the heat. I thought it was a leaky exhaust, but after changing it, the smell remains when the heat is on? WTF? The PD does not leak because I fixed it properly already and have double checked it.

I've got the same problems.
I think it's the lower grommets not sealing well.
Did you replace these?

I replaced my lower grommets on the primarys, they were very brittle, it solved the problem.

A little tip one those stupid lower grommets is to get a length of 10mm ID silicone hose and cut pieces with a sharp razor blade.  Screw Mazda for charging so much for those stupid things that get hard in 10,000 miles!  I can get one foot of 10mm silicone hose for ONE grommet!  If you can't get the silicone hose, get heater hose for even less money - make sure you get the hose without the reinforement braid molded into it!

And - of course - carry a fire extinguisher..

i am having the same problem and i just took it to a shop the part will have to be special orded for 137.00. my leak is on top of the intake manifold and the smell is very bad . i think it is called some kind of pulse damper. if i remember

I get that smell too. I hate it it always creeps me out

Raymr 02-12-04 07:07 PM

Check for leaks when the engine is cold. The fuel from a small leak on a hot engine evaporates almost instantly, and you will never see it.

hmmm good to know Ill try. For only 25 years old my sense of smell sucks! too much fuckin coke!just kidding(tasteless)

If you smell fuel, you have a leak.

If you delay fixing it:...

I get a big woooosh sound when i go to fill up. Does that meen the charcole canister isn't venting? Could that maybe cause the fuel smell?

SpeedFreak03 02-13-04 08:29 AM

Maybe, but Im not sure if that would cause a fuel smell. I guess you could check it out tho, couldn't hurt! Good luck man and I hope your car doesn't turn into the one sureshot posted!

I replaced the primarys and which they have new grommets and I still get the smell. Whats up with that?

SureShot 02-13-04 08:43 AM

Fuel system leak check:
With the engine cold, pressurize the rails. (initial set connector grounded, switch on, no start)

If you smell no fuel, it could be a vac leak blowing under boost.
With the engine running & a fire extinguisher handy, spray car cleaner at possible leak areas (primary injector seats, oil injectors, IM gaskets, vac hoses, etc)
Carb cleaner sucked in at a vac leak will make a noticable change in the idle sound.

I have the same fuel smell under acceleration, and I nailed it down to my charcoal canister, you can actually see where the fuel had lightly dripped from the overflow hose on the bottom of the canister.
Does anyone know what can cause this?

gtxdriver 02-13-04 02:25 PM

Mr Grimm, Do you get a wooosh sound when you take off your gas cap when the tank is empty?

MR.GRIMM 02-13-04 04:28 PM

yeah, I get that sound, it is not real loud but it is noticeable. any suggestions?

It's normal.
It's louder the more you empty that tank.
If you try to fill the tank at 1/2, you almost never get that sound.
At 1/4 tank, it's barely there.
