fuel pump problems

87 non turbo. Car was sitting 2 years. I repalced the fuel pump 2 days ago and the car cranked. Today I tried to crank and discovered fuel pump is not operating. I've got power to the red lead at the pump, but it will not come on. I ran a power source directly to the pump and it operates. This is my first rx7 and I could use some help trouble shooting. Thanks

there should be a fuel pump relay somewhere. I dont know exactly where. I can look on my haynes manual if you dont have one, so let me know. This problem where it works one day and doesnt the next is typical of relays from what I have seen. Sometimes they get stuck.

Look for the relay and try bypassing it for a second and see if your pump works. If it does, go to the For Sale section and make a WTB post.

There are lots of people parting out their cars right now so you couldnt have come at a better time.

there is a 2 prong empty clip near the pass side shock tower. jumper this with a wire, and turn the car to "on" and see if if it turns on. that wire will bypass the relays etc. this is just a temp. check. don't drive like that it's not safe. if it works find the problem still.

The fuel pump relay is located on the drivers side rear shock tower. Make sure it's connected. You were supposed to disconnect it before you changed your fuel pump, at least according to Haynes, and if you didn't, you might have blown a fuse or something...

Just some additional info. You did know that the fuel pump does NOT run unless the car starts or the key is held in the START position. When the key is released to the on position, and the car has not started, the pump turns off.

The yellow connector in Scotts picture is for the maintainence people to pressurize the fuel lines to check for leaks. If jumpered with the key to on, the pump runs continuously with the key to the on position.

i am aware the pump does not run continuously when the key is on; however it does run for a few seconds to pressurize the system

the jumper worked. the car runs. does this mean the fuel pump relay is bad or is there another possibility.
