Fuel Leak???? Please help.
 

Ok I have been smelling fuel for some time now. I parked it for awhile, but then was forced to use it. Anyway I have eliminated the pulsation damper from the problem. I can smell fuel near the back of the car and friends that have driven behind have clarified that for me. Anyway I found a small deposit of fuel near the rear of the car today, in the dirt where I park, so I know it's a leak. This worried me. I don't want to drive it any now, but I need to get it fixed ASAP. No one around my general area works on rotaries at all, so I want to fix this myself to get more acquainted with my car. Anyway any help would be greatly appreciated.

I just looked under the car and cannot see any leaks. Maybe a hose or something hidden?

well its leaking fuel from the rear of the car.... either gas tank or one of the fuel lines.

just about any shop should be able to find and fix a fuel leak. its gonna be hard to find without putting on a lift.

i dunno how anyone on here can help anymore. go find the leak!

Well, you gotta find the leak in order to fix it. If it is in the back of the car it is most likely a line leading to/from the gas tank or the gas tank itself. Once you find it for sure then you can consider your options to fix it/ either you or a mechanic. The gas tank or lines is nothing unique to rotaries and I don't understand why most mechanics refuse to work on rotaries on non rotary issues.....alternator, fuel pumps, radiator, brakes, etc. The main difference in only the engine and the attached equipment for the rotary engine.
If a mechanic is this narrow minded I would prefer he NOT touch my rotary because he, more than anyone should realize the similarity of all other systems outside the Rotary Engine.
Find the leak dude, then we can help with how to repair it....if there is no hole in the tank then it is one of the lines back by the tank (if its in the rear).

You need to jack up the rear of the car and get uner there, the gas tank is gigantic so you can't miss it. If the leak stops and you can't find it when the car has been off for a long time, it's probably the fuel lines at the pump... which you can get to by pulling up the carpet in the hatch area and removing the metal access hatch on the lower right side (looking in from the back of the car)

ok I opened up the metal covers over the tank and I can smell it there. So it is probably one of those lines huh. I put the car up and looked under it but cant see anything cause that tank is so big, didn't look like the tank had any holes, scrapes etc.. So I can take it to any "competent" mechanic and he should be able to fix it right? Should it cost very much?

Unless the tank has a problem it shouldn't cost jack... hours worth of labor maybe... tell him what you know already, where the leaky line might be... if you can I'd take it to a mazda mechanic just because they know the car... if the guy has never worked on an rx7 before he might screw something up... changing the fuel line means pulling the hose off... to do that you should disconnect the fuel pump and then crank the car for about 8 seconds to relieve the fuel pressure in the lines. Then pull them off, tighten them or whatever...

You could also start the car with that metal cover off (so you can see the fuel pump cover area with the two hoses coming out of it) and see which one leaks... maybe just needs the clamp to be tightened.
