Fuel Leak... only when car is parked downhill.

There is a raw gas smell when the car is parked facing down hill.

I've checked under the hood and I'm pretty sure it is not the PD as I can't see or smell any gas under the hood. Visually I see no drops coming from underneath the car and I've checked the seal around the fuelpump and there is no fuel smell there either.

Any Ideas?

I'm having a hard time pin pointing where the fuel is leaking from as it is an intermittent problem. Today however there had to have been a substantial gas leak as the car has only been driven about 20-30 miles (stop and go) but has "burned" over a 1/4 tank of gas. The car is otherwise running properly.

avoid hills in general and only park uphill...on a serios note there are not that many fuel components and a strong raw gas smell but no visable leaks? i would check you injecters and if they leak ie bad grommets then it can drip down and settle ontop of the block.. thats pretty bad gas milage especially for a na..

The fuel tank it self is relatively soft so where your sending unit and pump bolt on there is a metal ring to reinforce the mounting point. It develops a leak around there. I would only look at this as your source of the problem if you have checked ALL of your lines and your fill tube, make sure your drain plug is tight etc... But What I did to fix mine was with a high temp, high pressure permatex just sealed it up really good. Now it's going to suck when it comes time to need to be able to get the sending unit off, but I am no longer a driving bomb.

take note of the hill angle your parking on

is it happening on a higher angle etc etc





have you removed your emmisions equipment? ie carbon canister??


as by removing it any raw fuel sitting in the steel line (which it will get some from fuel slosh) will run the front of the pipe (engine bay).


and as stated check fuel tank gasket

Well now im not sure if it is the PD or not... I can see fluid on the lower intake manifold but its not evaporating and no fuel smell. Im going to get the car on a lift to check the tank area.

Fluid on the LIM is not a good thing. If you are leaving it outside, then it's been cold enough lately to where you will probably not be getting a lot of fumes off the puddle of fuel, so the odour will be very faint.

You may want to see if you can get a long straw or hose and take a small sample of the fluid. Put it on the ground and see if it burns.

I'm betting PD or injectors.

If the fluid on the lower intake is not fuel, then your fuel may be leaking from the small vent tube on the top of the tank that leads to the check and cut valve. They like to rust.
