fuel cut while hard cornering/drifting
 

i have a 90 gtu with a header and some weak ass loud exhaust. i got this car about 2 weeks ago and last night i finally said screw it and went on a little drift session..... well an attempt anyways.

when i first picked up the car, i went around a corner pretty quick and the fuel cut off on me. i didnt know what to think of it but then noticed i only had little less than a 1/4 tank. so i just assumed i needed some more gas. my old s14 did the same thing with me when i would drift and had 1/4 tank or less.

so last night, i drove this guys FD.... everything was fine, i was able to drift without any problems, but 40 or so seconds into it, his fuel cuts. i panic and pray to god i didnt break anything, then notice he only has 1/4 tank.....so i figure the fuel went over to one side of the tank and that was it.....

then i take my car out.....i have a full tank of gas. i come into the parking lot and try to start. as soon as i feel the rear break out, fuel cut. so i try again....and again....and once more for the hell of it.

i was wondering if this is common? does the factory ecu have some kind of safety fuel cut when traction is lost?

i really have no idea what im doing mechanically with this car. i was born and raised nissan, so this is my first mazda to ever touch.

sorry for the long thread, but when i moderate my forum, i hate when people arent specific with somethng like this. seeing how it could be 20 different things.

This is in the FAQs. Either your fuel sock is dirty or the baffles in the tank are rusted out.

my buddies did this same thing...his was a dirty fuel sock

I think thats the most common cause.

this happened to me, it wasn't the baffles or sock. it was the fuel pump. i upgraded to a walbro 255 high pressure and since then i have pulled well over 1 lateral g with no problems whatsoever.

don't assume it is the sock or baffles. the funny thing is, is that my old pump still ran when hotwired to the battery or rear lights. but just couldn't get the job done.

re-wire the new pump up. i would recommend ebay -95.00 for a new walbro for a s5 or fd.

New ebay pumps come with a new sock and a different placement of the sock for pick up. So that would also fix the problem of a clogged/dirty sock

You wasted $100 for a new pump when a $10 part would have fixed the issue.

Ha! thanks for your expert advice. too bad you weren't around when i put the new sock on the old fuel pump and not a thing happened. shows that you don't know what you can't see first hand. don't you think i would have tried to do that in the first place? 17.00 for a turbo mx-6 fuel sock or 100.00 for a new pump? in my opinion i wasted the 17.00 because it didn't do a thing to help me with my situation.

sure it may help in lots of cases, but don't assume it is the mother of all solutions.
