Freshly Swaped Rx7 Wont Turn Over!
hey wassup guyz
as u can tell im new to this forum but yea so i bought this 1986 rx7 base model n/a a couple months ago with a seized motor cuz its been sitting for years.. 3 years without a startup to be exact so i decided to do a swap last month the new motor had 40k original miles and it currently has 15k on the rebuild i dont know wat kind of rebuild kit it was... so the mechanic didthe swap but they couldnt get it to turn over the fuel tank had tar and gel all in it so i replaced the tank n pump n i also blew out the old fuel from the lines n thank god they werent clogged with gel...so after the new tank was installed we tried once again n nothing so i unflooded the motor myself because the mechanics dont have much knowledge on rotarys..n i got new plugs checked the firing order on the wires and tried the atf trick..i got a lil bit of hope because first time i tried to start it with atf it almsot turned over..it gave a lil bang n the rpm increased a lil bit n it smoked but it never got high enuff to idle..i tried it again a couple days later and the same thing happned n i tried once more but now nothing happens the motor just spins n nothin else..n evrytime i take out the spark plugs to clean them i smell fuel so i know its not that..n i can hear that theres compression and the mechanics said that theres spark so i don know wat to do anymore..ive tied to contact a rotary specialist in my area but there is hardly anyone out here wit experience on these motors..and i just started school so i left the car in the mechanics hands to see if they can figure it out..to me i think that there might not be a good spark cuz of a bad ground or bad timing? i also bought a new battery n i asked the mechanic to check the basic timing n he said it was ok..but idk how wuld yuh check the timing without the motor running? oh the motor is from an 88 n/a..the kid said he just pulled the motor out n it sat in his garage for about a year..but theres deff nothing wrong mechanically with the engine.. so if anyone culd help that wuld be great..any input would be greatlly appreciated.. this is my first rx7 and also fisrt car and im havin doubts about this car..i dont want to sell it but i just started school n i need a good running car PLEASE HELP! |
First thing is compression check. Don't bother doing anything else until you're absolutely certain it has GOOD compression on all 3 faces of each rotor, not just by how it sounds (especially if you don't have experience with a good vs bad). After that, check for vacuum leaks. Then check every pin at the ECU to make sure everythings connected/working properly.

yeah def check compression before u try to put any more money into it trying to get it to run

if compression is good jsut do this, tie it to a truck and once they get you rolling let the clutch out in second and let them keep pulling you until it comes to life.
If you cant do that just get 4 buddys to get you rolling on a push, preferably downhill and let the clutch out in second, thats what I had to do to start my swap after my engine died. It'll puff puff and then come alive. If you hear 3 puffs from the rotors you can go ahead and do that. |
Thanks for all the responses..
This is deff the best rx7 forum on the web!!=] the mechanics said they checked for compression with a regular compression tester and there was obviouslly no compression becuase they dont have the mazda tester.. but thething is that tester costs about 900$ and i deff don got money like that.. is there another way to check for good compression? before i put the motor in i rotated the crank and i felt for compression and it sounded good and the mechanics also said it sounded good to them... and evrytime i take out the plugs and crank the starter i can hear the engine popping air out the plug holes and i can feel heat coming from the plug holes.. oh and i don know if this helps but the motor has a mild street port on it but i think i might use the push start method as a last resort cuz its not insured.. oh and wen i pop the clucth in 2nd do i also have to turn the starter at the same time? |

We'll skip over the "Search n00b" and "read the FAQs" scoldings for now :)
I'd start out here: http://www.rotaryresurrection.com/2n...ion_check.html Good Luck! |
no you do not turn the starter if you push/pull start it
|
iight so im thinkin i might just do a rebuild in the near future and do a bridgeport..
duz anyone know any rotary oriented shops in newengland? or anythin close by? thanks guyz |
