Question Found 91 Vert n/a, questions about troubleshooting priorities!

A month ago, guy stops me in my son's 90 vert, n/a, and asks who works on it cause he has a 91 vert n/a that hasn't run in a year. I tell him me only, and he gets my number. Today, he calls, and I go to check it out. Got it running, idle is garbage, filthy dirty. I get it idle, but only at 1400, any lower it dies.

Question: I have checked all the obvious things, TPS, CAS, BAC, AFM, etc. etc. etc. is there a specific order of things to check FIRST, THEN SECOND, etc?

The check engine light is not working, so I couldn't pull codes. I am going to do a compression check tomorrow, but advice on a set priority list for the engine. 200, 000 miles, and I believe engine is going or gone, no smoke, except at first start up, and it is oil.

Thanks for the help. Hoping that he still wants to sell it. Original everything, even the leather seats with the headrest speakers still functioning.

PEACE THE MUTT

Check compression, and then look for vac leaks

Doing compression check tomorrow, I check twice for vacuum leaks with carb cleaner, and couldn't find any. Readings on TPS, warm, were 1.7 and 4.75. When I adjusted TPS to 1, it wouldn't stay running and idle was very erratic. Adj. timing, as best as possible, everything considered. Ice, all idiot lights working, except check engine. Ideas on that one?

Thanks, The mutt

The next step I would look at would be to see if someone messed with the $1000 screw/ adjustment on the throttle body.

Reset everything like timing and idle settings to stock and work your way down.

A.lso what color are the spark plugs??? Running rich or lean???
