Forum Member or anyone who knows FC light problems

My vert high beams don't come on. I thought I would just pull the headlight switch and send it out for repair but the dimmer attaches to the steering column. That sucks. I now assume the earlier idea won't work. How can I test and find out where the problem is? My service manual is for 87's and so won't cover this. Also the online manuals I've found any info on had nothing on this. Maybe I've just missed this part in them. anyway, any help will be greatly apperciated.

maybe bad relay or bad switch or maybe both brights burnt out

Does the blue lights come on in the dash? If so more than likely the bulbs are bad or somewhere past the high beam relay as the blue lights mean it's coming on.

Since the low beams never go off, I'm sure that either the dimmer switch or the relay is the problem. If the problem was the high beams themselves then when I pulled the dimmer switch the low beams would go off completely. I know how to check the dimmer and I will tomorrow but I'm moderately sure that the dimmer switch is the problem. If it was setup like my S4 then I could just get the switch repaired but I don't know how to replace the switch or even get to it on a '91 where it's part of the steering column.

Yeah, good point.

hey I just had the same problem, you have to replace the headlight relay. Mine work now, just to let you know my HB's didnt work either. Now they do after replacement.

headlight relay would be the first thing to look at, then the CPU.

On the verts with SRS the switch feeds the CPU (which controls the latch/unlatch On/Off circuit), then feeds to the headlight dimmer relay.

And no, I don't have any rebuilt CPUs for S5 verts with SRS.

Thanks for the replies. I quess I get to find out about CPU's unless I get lucky and the relay is the problem.
