Ford Probe and RX7

Hello, how many mechanical and electrical parts are related between the two vehicles? I did learn that the headlight switch I had to replace came from a Probe...interesting for sure...I was wondering about the motors for the headlights...they seem to be the same...just curious.

I think you mean commonality between Ford Probe and Mazda MX-6? I have both RX-7s and a Ford Probe GT and I'm not aware of any common parts between the two. However, most MX-6 parts are common with the Probe, but not all.

Thanks jdonnell...it's spooky how some of the parts look interchangeable with the two...I understand the MX6 and Probe relation...but are some weird similarities with the RX7 and Probe

well i dont know about now but ford i thought had some kind of ownership of mazda at one point...i did have a buddy that had a older ford probe TURBO that had a mazda motor in it.... it was stamped on the valve cover... i also know a master tech that put a ford escort motor in his older mx6...

ford also has some kind of ownership with jaguar.

just my 2 cents

I'm not aware of any part similarities between RX-7 and Probe. In the 20 years I've owned my RX-7, and 16 years I've owned my Probe, I can't recall any parts I've replaced being common between the two. Not to say that there aren't any, but I seriously doubt there are any common parts. But I often buy MX-6 parts for the Probe.

The only commonality between the two is that they are both headaches.

I've compared some of the headlight linkage bushings from my father's old 1989 Probe to my FB and FC... They're similar enough that they may work...

Since Mazda made all of these vehicles, I think they'd stick to a common design of some parts. Obviously body panels will be all different, but smaller components may be similar.

I don't have any solid examples, but I recall riding in a friend's 1g Probe and remarking how similar the headlight and wiper controls were to the FC. I didn't really inspect them, but from the passenger seat they looked very similar.

Both the MX6 GT and Probe GT are "identical." The motor is the same; The marque could be changed by unscrewing the nameplate from the the valve cover. The intercooler and the hoses to it were different between the two, but other than that it was just the name plate attached to the valve cover that made them different.

Though I'm sure you can find some more similarities, I don't think you'll find that any like components are cheaper, and would just be more labor to adapt.

the probe is a mazda built and is rebranded a ford

You could take a turbo probe motor and bolt it in to a an older mazda B2200,B2000 works with the tranny and all

If you really wanted to you could take a Mazda B2200 Bell housing put it on the N/a rx7 tranny and Bolt up the Fe3 motor with little headache the only fab for mounting would be the Motor mounts as you would use the stock Rx7 tranny and mount

and If you really are interested look up the Specs on The FE3 mazda motor pretty stout 2l that would kick ass in an rx7 just rare as hell unless you pull the motor from a Kia Sportage then slap a turbo on it lol ya i said Kia sportage lmao

X.ProphetEzra.X 02-10-10 10:21 PM

Lol when I first read the title I thought of my friends giving me shit cuz the front of the probes w/ pop-ups kinda look like fd's from REALLY far away.

Friend 1: "Nice probe"
Me: "Jackass"

I already knew things would fit together, but I got reminded of this when a friend told me about a miata swap that uses the Kia version of the FE3 block (already setup for RWD unlike the older Mazda version), with the 2.2L crank from the MX6/Probe GT and using a B2200. What you end up with is a 2.3L monster. MX6 guys were getting 400hp out of old turbo FE3s, I can imagine the ceiling on the 2.3L version...

Bwek 02-12-10 01:10 AM

the old fe3 originally was out of the 626 all wheel drive and had a forged bottom end was also a dual over head cam and the head flowed as well as a honda head

but the mx6 motors are single cam motors that dont flow as well

oh and the mitsu 4g63 you know the evo motor... bolts up to a b2600 tranny which is a modified turbo2 tranny.... ive only seen one or 2 examples of it and the pics sucked

i know there is a rwd tranny for the 4g63 100% out of the mitsu truck but im also pretty sure the b2600 motor was a mitsu motor as well

There are two versions of the 4G63. One for longitudinal mount and one for transverse... You need the RWD longitudinal mount, Wide block version.. It's found in the Starion as well.

The engine used in the Mitsubishi trucks as well as the B2600 is the 4G54. The bell housing you need is out of the 1987-1988 Mazda B2600... After 1989, they switched to a G6 Mazda engine. I believe it has a different bell housing.

Bwek 02-12-10 02:51 PM

^^ you would be correct about the bellhousings

there is an FD on youtube with a 4G63 goes like hell

Hypertek 02-12-10 06:17 PM

one has a historical importance behind it as one of the worlds first rotary powered sports cars, and the other is a car that people only fix up because its their first car that was givin to them lol. probe doesnt really have much going for it. Tell your grand kids "yeah i used to play with a ford probe" then they go looking it up on the net and see that it really didnt have much potential. lol

Bwek 02-13-10 03:20 AM

^^ lol truth

The probe was built to replace the mustang :/

I have a 90 Probe LX. I'm looking for the head lights connecting rods. They are used to open and close lights. Anyone know where to get um? Ty
