FMIC Question

New to the forum. You guys are awesome and helpful!!! Keep it up.

I just bought a 1990 TII 2 weeks ago for cheap. Nice condition. The owner had some mods previously (see sig) and installed them correctly (which is the best part). Awesome car and REALLY fast!!!

I am looking to upgrade the intercooler to a FM. However, I am a student w/ not much cash. I saw on ebay there were some Volvo and Starion cores for cheap. So the question is...how hard is it to install a FMIC? Is it as easy as installing a FMIC, removing the old pipings (inlet and outlet), and run new pipes from the new IC to the existing i/o'lets? Is that all to it? I figure some Home Depot pipes will cost me <$100 and the FMIC will be $100-$200. For a total of $300, I can get it done. Is there anything else? TIA...

You are forgetting silicone connectors and clamps. Add a couple hundred $$ and you will be in the ballpark.

Screw that, just use 'Sanitation Pipes' and connectors, works great :)

what has she run in the 1/4?

did you notice more turbo lag after installing the FMIC??
but more top end power?

Using plastic pipes, rubber connectors, generic clamps, and some heat shield wrappers (to wrap parts of the pipes and connectors to prevent heat soak). All said and done, I estimate the cost is about $100 parts (not including IC core).

What is the biggest core that can fit up front w/o cutting the bumper? Thanks,

For you guys w/ FMIC...

While looking at the stock IC, I noticed that there is a small vac. line that is behind the IC intake. What is this line for? What do I do w/ it if I install a FMIC since most cores only have an i/o'let...

I think only the series V IC has this line. Is this correct? TIA.

hey i think we're onto something....
my 89 has the same mods except that i have a 3" turbo back. i bought a starion intercooler from dave gibson. ( in great shape by the way ) and i have still yet to make some sort of piping for it. i would like to use cheap pipes and then fiberglass them down, so i could ship them off, to let say spearco and have them make me pre-bent pipes, so the finished product would come out better... i've seen pre bent pipe for sale to make your own i/c piping, but don't know how hard that would be.
also, does anyone know if the hks or greddy kits come with a throttle body adapter or do you use the stock one. :dragster:

yea i was just thinking about that today. about using sanitation pipes or pvc whatever. and then taking em to an exhaust shop or just ordering the piping and weldem together sounds good to me.

yea both kits greddy and hks use a throttle body adapter. both their piping is gay is heck if you ask me. going over the top of the engine:rolleyes: yuck

I made my pipes with prebent stuff. I cut it to fit and then used silicone couplers to hold the pipes together. When I re-do it and make it look nice I'll weld some of the pipes together for a cleaner installation.

Hey is there anyway to get a front mount volvo IC without moving your battery? Im really thinking about geting one but i dont know how nor do i really want to move my battery.
