Flywheel removal while still on car.

I'm in the middle of a full TII driveline swap. The flywheel nut was easy, but the flywheel will not move at all. We've used pullies, hammers, and a torch.

Any Tips for removing the flywheel while the engine is still in the car? I searched and read about getting a big sledge hammer, but I don't really have room to get a good whack with one of those.

Any help will be appreciated.

I used a 5lb rubber mallot on my engine, but it was out of the car. If you can get enough room to swing a heavy soft faced hammer it should come off, just hit it off center, rotate 180*, hit again. Just make sure it doesnt fall on you

Get a slide hammer puller and a 1/4" metal disc that fits just over the flywheel nut. Put the nut on loosely (so the flywheel can move, but not fly off), and put the slide hammer puller on it with like 3 washers behind it so it doesn't yank itself off (I bent 2 washers, but it stayed on).

Tighten the puller a little bit (don't twist it to try and pull it off, just tighten it "gudentight") Then just take some good thwacks with the slide hammer puller, tighten it again, thwack, tighten, etc.. it'll come off.

make sure that nut is on....don't want you posting saying a flywheel dropped on you. But as stated before just try and give it a couple whacks.

I'll try getting a slide hammer puller..

my friends and I whacked at that damn thing for about 2 hours. : /

Your hammer wasnt big enough then.

usually if you whack it a few good times on the outer edge near the gear ring it'll come loose in a few seconds, just whack it a couple times near the outer edge, rotate, whack it again. I got mine off with one good whack with a breaker bar :)

It still won't come off, I beat on it for an hour, I'm gonna try renting that slide hammer puller.

Mine was a bitch too..and I had the engine out! We used to metal rods on each side of the flywheel behind it, forcing it forward, then beat it with a hammer. While giving up and not even really giving it my full attention, clunk, it came off.

Well I'm gonna use this thread instead of makin a new one.

I got the bolt off but I cant get the flywheel off. Ive been prying it with a hammer for about an hour but no luck. Can I whack the outer edge with a hammer? Or do I need to get a soft side hammer? Oh and stupid question but do you hit it towards or away from the engine to loosen it?

Dolemite,

I used a prybar on mine (just be careful what you're prying against behind the flywheel). Also, make sure you've got that nut threaded onto the shaft so the flywheel doesn't pop off and fall! Pry a spot, rotate flywheel, repeat. You can try the above things too, though.

I had the engine out and three guys prying on it and one guy hitting it with a 20 lb sledge (we weren't keeping it :D). wouldnt move. After about 30 minutes of pounding it came off.

The fuckers are on TIGHTLY. It will come off eventually, but you just have to POUND it. And use prybars at opposite sides, try to wiggle it, and pounding it with a hammer at the same time.

take a peice of fire wood and just keep smashed it againt the flywheel.

i rented a puller both times ive done mine in the car, it had 3 arms with hooks and a threaded rod you turn in the center, worked well, kinda scary while doing it though, cus when the flywheel pops the puller falls, so be ready. Also you have to put the arms of the puller on in such a way that they grap, which means basically 2 arms around the counterweight and one on the opposite side, make shre the nute is partially on.

when we were working on xentrix's car we had to go borrow a actual fly wheel puller from a friend at a shop. we couldn't find a puller to rent from either advanced or autozone.
