Flywheel removal & pilot bearing seal

Okay...
So im doing an auto to manual swap

I got the big ass 54mm nut off, that was easy. Now the flywheel is on the tapered shaft like hell. Is there any way to get it off other than going and buying a gear puller?

Also... I keep reading about a pilot bearing seal. I've got a pilot bearing that came with the clutch kit... but... I have no seal? I went to napa, checkers(advanced auto), A1, and carquest... They all say "Well It's in the book like its there, but there's no part number, we don't carry it."
me: "can you order it"
them: "no, theres no part number... it does't exist... are you sure there is a pilot bearing seal"
me: "does your book show one?"
them: "yes"
me: "then thats what I need"
them: "theres no part number, we don't have it"
me: "but its in the book?"
them: "yes."
me: "then you can order it"
them: "we can't, theres no part number"

That is an actual conversation... just like that...

WTF??

Thanks!

Mazdatrix has the pilot bearing seal, sorry, don't have the p/n here at work.. look 'em up on the net...it's about $2

Digi7ech 02-18-04 02:47 PM

Holy shit dude. 8 POSTS!

I think you just made a record!!!!

Kenteth 02-18-04 03:47 PM

yeah, i PM'd mark about it... must be out to lunch or something...

nashman69g 02-18-04 03:50 PM

Ok I also did this swap myself...For that damn counterweight just bang on it until it loosen up... Now as for the seal you need to go to Mazda and get the part (part #1881-11-404)...its like $3 ...The bearing goes in first followed by the oil seal...Now when you go to put the seal in the rubber side goes toward outside and the metal side goes toward the needle bearing(I think 90% right)!

So about the flywheel... I took of the 54mm nut...
I bought a gear puller, but it looks like its too short (lengthwise) to catch the balance bolt holes. I'm not even shure if thats where it should go?

So.. I pried a little... then i hit it a bunch of times (the flywheel) on the sides.

anyone?

EDIT: let me rephrase. The flywheel is still on the engine, i can't get it to pop off. I have taken off the 54mm nut, but haven't taken any of the balance bolts off. How do i go about getting it off of the engine?

Aaron Cake 02-18-04 03:53 PM

I deleted the extra posts...

To get the flywheel off, use a pry bar to the flywheel off the shaft while you hit the mounting flange (NOT the friction surface) with a small (< 5LB) hammer. Should pop right off after a few whacks...

Kenteth 02-18-04 03:56 PM

thanks for the clean up aaron.. not sure what happened...

nashman69g 02-18-04 03:57 PM

are you talking about the manual flywheel or the auto one?

Kenteth 02-18-04 03:58 PM

auto

EDIT: well.. I need to get the auto one (flexplate) off...

EDIT: called the mazda dealer for the pilot bearing seal. I gave him the part number, but hes going to lookup in his books to verify it. Apparently that above number comes up "seal" heh.

Ok, just ordered the pilot bearing seal, $3.90 + 5.00 overnight shipping. Otherwise it wouldn't have gotten here until a week from friday.

So... pry on the engine side towards the rear or the car? Then hit on the opposite side of the prying, towards the engine on the mounting area (no friction area on flexplate).

Thanks guys!

nashman69g 02-18-04 04:08 PM

take the (i think) 6 bolt out and the flexplate should come off...The counterweight should just sitting there ready to be beaten off! I think thats right?

Philip_g 02-18-04 04:08 PM

pry on the flywheel, and it it towards the car, but leave the nut on a little bit so it doesn't fall on your foot

Ok so take those balance bolts off before I take the flexplate off the engine?

The engine is still in thecar btw

Aaron Cake 02-18-04 04:12 PM

Pry on the flywheel so that you are attempting to pry the flywheel off of the eccentric. So you're using the engine as the fulcrum of the lever.

I normally alternate prying against the flywheel and the engine (pushing the bar towards the engine, or pulling it away).

Your hammer blows should be applied to the outer edge of the flexplate, but be careful not to knock the ring gear off...

Sorry I said "friction surface" in the previous post...in my mind auto RX-7s don't exist. :D

fastrotaries 02-18-04 04:12 PM

you can get one from the dealer and it not expensive. THEY SHOULD have a part number for it, although it won't help you with autozones, pepboys or napa outlets.

nashman69g 02-18-04 04:12 PM

HE's TRYING TO GET THE FLEXPLATE OFF NOT THE FLYWHEEL....THE FLEXPALTE IS TOO THIN TO PRY ON!!!!!!

Kenteth 02-18-04 04:13 PM

Thanks aaron!

Edit: no prying then?
