Flywheel center bolt wont come off!!!!1

I was wondering if there was a lock or i mite be too weak. i've tried a couple thing but it wont come off

blue 88 08-28-07 09:31 PM

two words impact gun

90FC 08-28-07 09:34 PM

It is a pain to get off. I had to use a impact wrench on it. You can probably rent one locally...

blue 88 08-28-07 10:02 PM

if you were closer i'd lend you mine

FC3sinfiniIII 08-28-07 10:02 PM

bolt or nuts buster, We use that to open my s5 13b that lock completely, let it sit for a day. Apply as many times as posible during the day, you can buy it at autozon or discount auto parts.

Your weak. I do it by hand:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vbJTMSnC0F4

Seriously, you need a large breaker bar (6 foot does nicely) or an impact gun. This is well covered in the FAQ so check there for details.

Stanis 08-29-07 10:40 AM

I removed mine with a 2 ft breaker bar. :)

I just used a hard mallet and beat it exactly 3 times and it broke loose. Just remember to hold it tight so the rebound won't smack you in the face somehow.

See Below:

Hold with left hand and then use right hand to hit with hammer. Keep the tension on the bar so it won't bounce off when you hit!

I use my teeth.........................
Naw. I borrow my friends Mazdatrix Flywheel removal bar. It works great.

:shocking:

wow thats fuckin amazing lol

wackaloo13 08-29-07 01:06 PM

just use a really long breaker bar, if that doesnt work, get an even longer one. It will pop free or break

Richter12x2 08-29-07 01:19 PM

I have to ask the obvious question - you're bracing it so that the engine won't turn when you turn the breaker bar, right? :D

Anyway, when I have a tough one, I remove the oil pan, oil pickup and restrictors from the bottom of the engine so that it'll sit flat on the ground, then put the passenger side mount back on (without the oil pan.) Lower the engine to the ground with the hoist, lift the leg of the hoist and put it over the engine mount, and then jack it up so that it's snug, and held in place by its own weight and the weight of the hoist. Put the breaker bar handle on the appropriate side and jump on it as hard as you can, as close to the end as you can. Back it up with a jack handle if necessary.

Fossil484,

What did you use to prevent the flywheel from turning? I kinda see a couple of bolts on the rear iron...btw, that's one serious breaker bar.

Hulk smash flywheel nut. Hulk smash! Hulk can't seem to get socket on nut though. Hulk sad. Socket keep slipping off. Hulk have mullet. Hulk look like Garth Algar.

7dust 08-29-07 01:41 PM

Aaron: thats a nice bullshit video to fuck with the newbs. Oh yeah - get a haircut. :D

Original poster: don't be a pussy. Get an impact gun like everyone else. :)

Everyone else with 6 foot breaker bars: I know this will work but last time I tried using the long ass breaker bar, I broke a motor mount in the process.

Mechanic 08-29-07 01:47 PM

i did what aaron did, no joke

xclusive_one 08-30-07 12:02 AM

wow never seen that chain idea but it makes sense... mazdatrix sells a flywheel stopper but I'd suggest you rent or buy the impact gun... you'll probably want it when you reinstall everything anyway because torque is around 250 ft lbs and you dont want that thing ever coming loose... good luck

misterstyx69 08-30-07 12:14 AM

if you look at the "chain pic"..that is When the flywheel nut is Tightened..But Ya,I did the Exact Same thing when I had to take my Flywheel nut off.I strapped the Engine to a Pallet, had my Buddy's son sit on the engine(to prevent it from Rocking). My Buddy put the Socket and 42" breaker bar on and Jumped on it..three Jumps,it came loose!..Funny thing though..my Buddy thought.."nah..you just Loosen that off and you Don't need that BIg Bar!..Blah,Blah!.."..Sorry Chevy dude!,I said..it's a Wankel!

Richter12x2 08-30-07 09:03 AM

Huh, I may have to use that chain idea next time. :D I just put a wooden hammer handle down through the top inspection port between the counterweight. Chain sounds much safer, and is easier on wooden hammers. :(

For the record, 86-88 FSM, chapter 1, page 62:

Tightening torque for Flywheel nut is 290-360 ft-lb. FSM links in my sig.

NJGreenBudd 09-02-07 12:25 PM

I just did mine with a 54MM socket, 18" long 3/4" Breaker bar w/ a big pipe over the end. I had my brother and dad step on a board over the one motor mount to keet the engine from turning and then just popped it loose. Second time doing it by hand, seems to work fine.

staticguitar313 09-02-07 01:17 PM

D-OH!!! i dished out $24 bucks for a flywheel stopper and i coulda used a chain!!!?!?!?!?!?!? FUCK!

NJGreenBudd 09-02-07 01:33 PM

Yeah I bought that stopper too, but I've used it twice now so it's handy to have around, makes it quick and easy.

This is what I did this morning:

2 1/8" Socket and 3/4" Breaker bar from Sears - $95 for both(ouch!)
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d/100_3982.jpg

Mazdatrix Flywheel Stopper -:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d/100_3983.jpg

Big Pipe over the end:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d/100_3984.jpg

Old Main Rear Seal:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d/100_3979.jpg

New Main Rear Seal:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b3...d/100_3981.jpg

Once the nut was broken loose, i placed a 2x6 over the flywheel and tapped it with a 5lbs sledge, spun it and tapped twice more and it pooped right off.
