flushing coolant system

i was slightly shocked to check my coolant level today in my car to find the whole damn thing empty with a little dirty fluid left -- decided that maybe i should flush the system so i go and get the 50/50 mix and look in my hayne's manual figuring that it should be a breeze all i have to do is find the various bleeder's for it in the engine bay and radiator but then realized that they were not where the pictures of them are in the haynes manual or maybe im just a retard... can someone please tell me how to do this i know it can't be that damn tricky and i refuse to take it to someone else to do it -- if anyone has a picture of where it is please post

the car in question is a 90' vert n/a if that makes any difference at all...

edit--

ok so i found the manuals for the car in the FAQ -- imagine that -- anyway it does appear that one of the bleeders is under the radiator and the other is in a hella hard to reach spot on the engine... maybe

anyway -- where can i get some new hoses for my engine -- i wont be driving this car anywhere for another 40 days or so... anybody have a link or want to tell my sizes of hoses and where i can get them? what hoses are the most important to change -- there is a lot of fuckin hoses in there and it looks like i would have to fuckin lift the damn engine out to get them all -- especially the fuel hoses

one more stupid question while im at it... when changing the oil (new subject) it says to put a new gasket on when placing the oil drain plug back in place... what size and where to get it please...

so i guess i am basically asking for someone to tell me how to do the 60 k maintinance -- thanks

have you tried to search the forums

Ballin_is_a_Habit 09-04-05 03:48 AM

yea mostly found tips like "flush coolant" or "you should do the 60,000 mile service" not anything too helpful so i decided to get specific and see if some of the rx-7 OG's can help me out

In the middle of the left motor mount there is a 14mm size fitting. Unscrew it and drain there.

The drains are shown in the COOLING SYSTEM of the Free Online FSM. Both series four and five.

ok -- but am i correct in thinking that i need to unscrew the one under the radiator first, then moving on to the left side of the enigine? -- im hoping that i dont need to jack up the car for this, but maybe i would benefit from borrowing my neighbor's ramps to drive the two front wheels onto - if you can't tell already i have little experience workin with cars as my family has always been the type to have someone else do it, but i am determined to do this shit myself.

The drain b't the left front motor mount can be reached from above. I've done it before using I THINK a 14mm box end wrench.

The one on the bottom left of the radiator has to be accessed from under the car. Car ramps are good enough. That one is easily broken by overtightening.

good to know -- i will be doin this tomorrow morning -- i will take some pics and maybe help someone else out when they do it thanks for your help man

I want to do a coolant flush on my TII.. been looking for a write-up for a while.

2slow4stock 09-04-05 03:00 PM

My coolant flush is unpluging one of the hoses and taking out the theromostat so it isn't pluged in and then sticking the garden hose into the radiator. If you do it right, Water shouldn't spew everywhere from the radiator fill part... but from where the thermostart comes from thats how I flush my engine then, it would just be filled with water. But for winter just drain the bottem of the radiator and put 50/50 in for winter. I only run mainly all water in the summer but thats just me.

I used to work at a Tire kingdon and we used a machine that automatically did it without having to remove any plugs and what not. Wish i had one of those. Be careful with the plastic drain plug at the bottom of the rad, that thing strips too easy.

Alright everyone -- thanks for your help -- it took me about 2 hours to do this but if you knew what you were doing i bet you could do it in half or even a quarter of that time (much of that time was spent trying to locate the drain on the engine block)

here are the pictures:

thanks for the pictures .!

I flush every two years and also drain both sites. I complicate it by dropping the lower cover. Then I take a yard stick broken in half and remove all the bugs, leaves, and dirt trapped between the radiator and oil cooler. Follow that with blasts from a high pressure air compressor. First time I did so, I was amazed at the crap that came out. The car had 87K on it and I was a new owner. It can't but help cooling both oil and coolant fluid.

Mazin 11-09-05 08:55 PM

i read some where that there are two drain sites ... one is under the radiator and the other is under the engine? is that right?!
im talking aout rx7 91 na..
anyone has any idea?!

Sideways7 11-27-05 05:04 PM

Yeah, one is under the rad and the other is in the left engine mount. They were talking about it earlier in the thread.
