Flooding. Won't Start.
 

I can't get my 88 GTU to start, because whenever I crank it, it floods. I can unflood it, but whenever I plug in the FI plug under the dash, it starts to flood again. It's getting way too much gas. If I'm lucky enough to get it started, I have to rev it to 4k or it will stall. But when I rev it, it backfires like crazy, because so much fuel is exiting the chambers through the exhaust.

What should I check and how?

Possibly could have leaking injectors? I'd wait for a guru to answer that. I use to have issues starting my car (87 TII) I had a fuel cut switch installed on my dash below my steering wheel. With the switch on I usually just crank for about a second, if it doesn't start cut off the fuel while continuing to crank it. Then it starts up, after it starts I turn the switch back on to keep the fuel going to the engine. Also as a side note, shutting the car off by cutting the fuel allows the injectors to run dry of fuel. Shutting the car off this way can also be helpful and prevent flooding on future start ups, and is also good for long term storage. The switch doesn't cost much and installation is simple. I didn't do the install because I had a pro do it for me when I first got the car. I still don't know much of eletrics yet anyways =) paying someone else to install it for me was only about 25-30 bucks including the switch. It was worth it for me to start my engine without flooding, and not have to constantly play with my fuse. Good luck.

check the temp sendor on the back of t stat housing. It is green BTW That is the CPU 's reading. If it is broke or unpluged it will run as stated, rich as hell. Also might have a injector stuck open. Try to have someone plug in the fuse WHILE it is cranking.

I'll check that fuse. I had broken one of the secondary injectors, so both secondaries are new stock ones.

Sometimes I can get it started by cranking it with the egi plug pulled out below the dash, then plug it in when it starts to fire. But once it's running, I have to give it lots of gas to keep it going. And at the same time, it backfires a lot and smells like gas. Maybe the AFM?

try removing the AFM plug and the 2 fuses closest to the engine and then crank it. But u have to crank it 5-6 times for 10-15 seconds each. Once u have gotten all the fuel out and nothing but air is coming out of the two Trailing Injectors (No white fluid). Put the two fuses back on and start it up again. with the AFM plug off it will burn any excess fuel left in the two rotors. then plug the AFM back in and bam it should start up with no problems. That's how i got my 88 JSpec to stop flooding. Good luck
