Fixing the infamous white FC paint chips...

How!? Along with half the s4 white FCs, my paint has been chipping. It's been getting pretty hardcore below the hatch, sunroof, and some on the hood.

I'm looking for a solution to fix the chipping, and I know nothing but a new paint job can make it look perfect. I'm not looking for perfection, I just want to make it look decent.

Whether it be rolling, touch up, or aerosol(sp?) cans, what would be the best choice to fix it up? I expect to prep it with sanding and priming, but I need to know the next step.

Does anyone have experience with this? Suggestions?

The paint comes off with an AIRHOSE. The ONLY way is to get the paint off and repaint. I have the same problem. Bad paint/primer combo on the white ones :(

i also have a white fc with paint missing. my freinds have a proformance and body shop. we were talking about this problem yesterday. he said the car co.s used crazy stuff to paint cars in the 80s. sand it prime it paint it. how big is your budget? if you do all the sanding and priming you can get a pro to paint it for cheap. let me know how it works out for you guys.

I found this link from one of IceMark's posts: www.automotivetouchup.com

Reasonable prices, especially for quality matched. You can order the paint/primer/clearcoat i spray cans or bottles.

I think I'm going to dry or wetsand it all down, and go from there with the paint on that website.

I suppose I'm going to need primer after I sand down to the bare metal, then lay on a few basecoats, and end up using a clearcoat. So it seems I need primer, sandpaper, basecoat, and clearcoats. YAY :)

or look up the 50 dollar paintjob its been on many forums including rx7club it involves rustoleum

CaliJB 02-25-07 08:54 PM

Let us know how it goes. I have the same problem.

yeah the body shop found my paint was having probs on the when i got it repainted. teh paint/ primer combo was the culprit. the $50 paint involves a lot of time abut can look pretty good. i would just get a conventional paint job and be done w/ it. they can be pricey though...unless you got a hook up like mine who wil paint your car and do the bodywork for $500 including supplies....in 2 and 1/2 days!

Its nice to know(I think) that im not the only white FC with paint problems.

i wasted so much time trying to do touchup paint on my GTU when I bought it. It inevitably looks like shit.

If you have actual rust spots, go to carquest and get some rust converter and touch up paint. Brush the stuff on. It will still look like shit but it's better than rust. I just ended up getting the whole car repainted.

More chippin' white FCs than you think. :(

I'd rather my car almost* be the same color all the way around, rather than to have blotchy primer colors.

My friend just finished his rustoleum paint job. Lots, lots, lots, and lots... have I mentioned that it involves a lot of labor!? :)
I might do it if I were painting it a dark color such as black, but they often come out pretty dull. That is, at least from what I've seen!

As for the rust, I'll be sanding it all out, prepping, fiberglassing, and painting the small rust patch I have on my outer fender well. I know, I know... cutting it out and welding in a new sheet is the PROPER way to do it. But hell, if I wanted my car to be simply beautiful, then I wouldn't be a driver, I'd just be a car-guy. :D

does anyone have the same problem with s5 models?

robtechfabrications 02-26-07 03:21 AM

mines s5...same problem...i just take my orbital to the spot and sand it til it doesnt flake anymore and smoothly fades in with the paint then primer/sand, primer/sand, til its even (not sunken in where the paint was) and then hit it rattlecan white. not prefect but looks good enough to not be embarassing.

White FC's came stock with primer under the white paint? crazy, never woulda been able to tell... are you sure they arnt just no primer and cheap white paint straight on the metal?

micah 02-26-07 04:57 AM

I just started removing my paint in prep for a new paint job... .. using a pressure washer.... I have over 60% of the paint off..

I'm going black in protest of the color white. :)

Also, I hear that once you go black....

skizzle84 02-26-07 08:25 AM

...you don't go back!?

black or white...black or white... ah white can look so fresh, but black is so much more bold.
argh!

How does touchup paint compare to our somewhat faded paint?

JabroninWARRIOR 02-26-07 09:04 PM

dont paint your car with an aerosol spray can BECAUSE once it gets low, it starts burping out globs of paint :(

skizzle84 02-26-07 09:04 PM

...does that come from a bad experience?

NFMRYDERS 02-26-07 09:21 PM
