fixin up my car
 

Well, I need some advice! I have an 88 gxl that I wanna fix up but I do not want to spend a fortune. I just got a quote for the exhaust...$875!! Is there a cheaper way? I just want my car running nicely, not racing around town. Maybe the guy at the "car place" saw a girlie girl coming but according to him I needed to spend that much to "protect the integrity of the car". I just wanted a normal exhaust, like it had before. Sad and Broke here guys, help me out!

sweet car, welcome to the group. What part of your exhaust do you need? i have cats, y pips and mufflers that are all for sale (way less than 850 too) Also if you do the exhaut yourself you will save a tone, what exhaust are you getting?

I don't want anything that sounds ricey! Sorry guys but was priced to me was y pipes, mufflers and tips. Oh, and labor but if I do that stuff myself will I be required to weld? :) This girlie is kinda car illiterate when it comes to technical stuff

i have direct replacement cats, both have less than 500 miles on em, and then the stock ypipe and stock mufflers

thers no welding on my exhuast, and if you got the same stuff i have (OEM stuff) there shouldnt be any welding on that either

A factory style exhaust that is not emissions legal can be made for a few hundred dollars by any exhaust shop.

If you need to remain legal, check out out http://www.rx7.com. They can supply an aftermarket catalytic converter for a decent price, and an exhaust shop can build the rest. Maybe $500?

If you are installing a factory exhaust setup, bend over and close your eyes because you're going to get screwed.

You have a few options available:
1) buy factory new = very expensive
2) buy factory used (like from a forum member) = very reasonable, but a used part with many miles and ware on it.
3) buy hi-performance new = $300 - $800, depending on brand.
4) buy an custom setup from a local exhaust shop.

Just remember, its much cheaper to do the install yourself. And I'm sure you know a guy or two that would be willing to help you out with the wrenching.

I am in Jacksonville, NC. On the coast, where the marine corps base is. There are plenty of people here to help me I guess. Although most of them are deployed to Iraq right now. Thanks for the advice. I will look around.

Well, Whats the exhaust like on the car right now? You said that you wanted it to sound "normal not ricey" so in that case does it sound "ricey" right now? If so, you might have some sort of aftermarket exhaust, that you could sell to a forum member (ricey could also mean racey/performance to the trained ear) or trade for factory exhaust. I myself have plenty of factory exhaust shit around and to be honest i hate the shit. Good Luck and welcome to the forum.

It is factory....I just do not want my car to be loud and obnoxious. I do not want people to hear me coming from two miles away. Sounding racey is ok. I also cannot afford to spend a small fortune right now.
