fixed PD, now car wont start
 

hey guys...... i just replaced my pulsation damper, i got everything apart and found that i had a broken fuel-injector (the little plastic surround on the bottom), but id didnt fall and i managed to get the piece out of the manifold. i got some injectors off a parts car that blew a motor and put those on. after i got everything back together, i had the battery completely out as well, i tried to start the car, i got a few puffs of white smoke out of the back but it wouldnt turn over, it sounded the same as when you flood the car out. anyhow, the guys helping me, heard a hissing sound coming off the secondary fuel-rail and it was the bolted-on part on the front where the fuel-line attaches. we pulled it off and put it back on and it doesnt hiss anymore, but it still wont start......... im confused, frustrated, and broke, any suggestions?

how long have those "parts car" injectors sat doing nothing? probably rusted and/or clogged up...I now it's a PITA taking everything apart again, but bad injectors off of a "parts car" bit me in the ass, too...

possibly flooded. try unflooding it by pulling the EGI fuse in the fuse box and cranking it over a few times. Put it back in and try starting it.

ive tried the fuse pulling to un flood, but it didnt work, even jumped it from a buddies car to keep from killing the battery. the injectors were in the car since..... november i think is when it popped, but they looked hella better than mine that were in there. ill try putting my good injector back in and see if maybe just one of them was bad. does anyone know where i can get injectors for under $80?

With 2 cars in the mix, why not send one set off to Rich at Cruzin' Performance and have them cleaned and flowtested? If memory serves, $11 each

what places flowtest injectors? i called advanced and parks and they dont know of anyone that does, do i have to go to a performance shop, or can i take them to a garage or something? only 1 of the original ones are good, the other was broken when i took it out of my car, both of the other ones were okay though, apearance-wise anyhow.

okay, heres the deal, i swapped the injectors around and still no start, but i keep hearing this hissing sound coming from the end of the secondary fuel rail, i cant tell if it is the injector or the bolted on part on the end of the rail, the sound gets softer when i put my fingers around that piece but i cant tell if i am just blocking the sound from the source or just in the middle somewhere, i also cant tell if the hissing is pressure or vacume, im going to assume id is pressure because i smell fuel when i tried to start the car. someone please help, im getting frustrated and borrowing peoples cars is getting old.

all right,man, do what I had to do-take all the injectors back out of the car, get ya some air compressor hose (or similar I.D. sized hose), run it up the side of the house, garage, pole, whatever, at least 6-8 feet worth...get a 12v power source (car battery), make some leads to run from the battery source to the injector contacts (I used alligator clips for the battery connections and small female spade terminals for the injector contacts)...you can also put a switch of some sort in one of the 2 circuits if ya want to...put the injector boss in the end of the hose and tighten a small hose clamp to keep it there...get some acetone or similar solvent (MEK, toulene...), pour in the top of the hose (small funnel helps), and apply the 12v to the injector contacts (if I remember correctly, the + contact is the left terminal of the injector connector if looking sraight at it- I don't know if it's polarity sensitive or not, but why take the chance)...you should hear the injector "click", and if it's not clogged up, the solvent will come out in a nice stream because of the pressure built up from the height of the hose...continue doing this with all injectors, if any are bad you'll know it...VIOLA, homemade injector cleaner and checker...try not to inhale much fumes from the solvents :)

thanks wayne, ill try that, any idea about the hissing sound? im not exactly the best mechanic but when you own a 7 on a budget you have to do what you can, lol.

Please tell me with all this injector swapping your doing you are using new o-rings and injector grommets!

This may also be the cause of your "hissing". Old worn out injector grommets will cause a vaccum leak between the injector and the manifold.

If your hissing is coming from the banjo bolt at the end of your rail you should have fuel leakage. If you removed this bolt did you put the "crush" washer back on when bolted it back up?

i didnt see any washers when i pulled everything apart and i didnt loose anything, where would they be?

other than maybe the fuel pressure regulator, you shouldn't have to remove any fuel lines/ banjo bolts from the fuel rails (unless you want to) to change the PD- just push everything out of your way for access to the injectors...good call on the lower grommets leaking, spvolt10 :)...that could be causing that hissing...

i had to disconnect the secondary rail so that i could get the manifold out, the hoses were pretty short and when i moved the rail out of the way is when i noticed one of them was broken, so i had to take it off, and because im paranoid enough as it is i unhooked the rail so i could get the injector in without breaking it. where can i get the grommets and the O-rings?

I see a lot of work here. Question, did you check the injectors manually? Let me give you an example as i have just done this on one of my 2nd gen 7's. I took my plugs out and found that the 1st. rotor housing was dry. I took off the UIM, unbolted the fuel rail to the secondaries, pulled all the injectors. Then I held them in the rails by hand and had my Girlfriend turn the engine over to see if i was getting fuel out of them. I know it's a PITA to hold them all but by pushing on the rail to hold the secondaries against the block and positioning in just the right way, it is possable. If you don't hold all of them they will pop out due to the pressure. I managed though and it wasn't too hard. I had other inj. from another 7 that looked good, but in my test all 4 of them were bad. I went to another parts car i have and tested, car sitting for 6 months, all good. This test will also let you know if one of the upper injector o-rings is leaking. It helped me narrow down my problem and i got inj. from the local u-pull for $5 each. Maybe this could help you?
