First Rotary Engine Tear Down (56K Beware)

Well today i got my cherry popped 3 times. We tore down 1 12A engine, and two 13B engines.

12A was in my boys first gen, was leaking oil

13B was in my old 88SE car which for some odd reason wound up back into myhands after 5 years (Small world). I think it had a coolant leak

13B in my 89 GTU that i sold, the engine was seized due to a thrustwasher disintergration.

First we started with the 12a, i was helping here and there with the parts etc. I took pics of the tear down step by step for a future write up.

The 13B from my old 88, i didnt take any pictures of it, was actually getting more hands on.

The second and more messed up 13B from the 89 GTU was done 100% by me, took me a lil bit longer than the other guys, but i did okay. Till i hite one major issue, the thrust washer where the front cover is located was DISINTERGRATED. So i decided to finish it off another day.

Here are some pics enjoy

Sweet! My first 12a teardown ended up with losing pieces of the motor in a flood. Like Wrath of god..50 year flood. It was the motor or my car. I chose to move my car instead.

^ lol . Yeah some corner seals and springs were lost lol

Here is the engine i did. This is the one with the messed up thrust plate/washer thingy.

lol I'm a Queens cop. I'll see you in 30 minutes! LOL! isn't it fun tearing 'em down. I wish I had a garage I'd pull 'em apart and rebuild 'em all day if I could.

ROTARYROCKET7 03-22-07 12:59 AM

good thing we have a air compressor and impact guns etc =)

We did some by hand, and some with the air tools. All good fun

Turblown 03-22-07 01:58 AM

Nice thrust plate!

ROTARYROCKET7 03-22-07 08:04 AM

shIT was rocked beyond belief, today i have to see if i can finish taking the seized plate off the shaft so i can finish taking off the housing/irons.

IF this was the only messed up part, is the entire engine rebuildable? I guess i have to measure everything against the factory specs.

More pics here.

This is one thing i never knew about, and never heard anyone mention. The size of the spark plug holes are different.

charlie, the big black guy who owns the rotary BMW, made it for the harbor freight engine stand. Dunno how he did it to be honest

We took the front eshaft bolt off with the aircompressor set on high. The thermopellet and spring unscrewed itself out thats how fast it was turning, since we had the big aircompressor set on high.
