Final assembly endplay and flywheel nut

I've been looking around and can't seem to find this

When checking endplay on the eshaft after final assembly. Is the flywheel nut tightened down? If it's tightened down is the flywheel on also? A friend keeps telling me yes, but I don't see it in my Atkins DVD or Aaron Cake's vid.

The flywheel does not affect setting end-play. It can be on or off...doesn't matter one bit.

Yes it does... you must secure the fly wheel or counter weight before adjusting end play. You will achieve a more accurate reading if done this way.

I don't see any way that that is a true statement.

it doesnt alter the readings if you have it on or off.

It just bolts the flywheel to the eccentric shaft, thats it.
The front pulley bolt is the only bolt/nut that matters on front end play since its what holds the entire assembly together.

I dont know if it matters or not, but the factory service manual measures endplay with the motor pointing down, with the flywheel on. The base dial indicator on the rear plate, using the flywheel surface to measure.

Whether you measure it at the front hub or rear flywheel, I don't see any problem with it.

You don't need the flywheel to measure end play.

However, installing the flywheel and turning the engine flywheel side down allows gravity to pull the eccentric against the torrington bearing, so you don't have to manually push the shaft down as you make your measurement.

Or you can leave the flywheel off and simply push down on the eccentric. *shrug*
