filling tranny with side plug bad?

Is changing the tranny fluid using the side hole (plug or check plug what ever) instead of the top fill hole, bad? or does it really matter?

If you have an N/A tranny, you should have only two plugs, so you should fill through the inspection plug.

If you have turbo tranny, there is another plug higher up, but you still fill to the inspection plug level.

What matters is that you get the correct amount of lube in the tranny. If you accomplished this you are golden.

If not you are screwed.

Do you have the Factory Service Manual? Look it up in the FAQ. It has the proper specs for any thing you need to do, including the correct grade of trannyoil.

Lots of people swear by Redline and also Royal Purple, but I have never used either one. I use Mobil 1 because it is good stuff and is available locally.

Good luck.

There is a thread called something like "redline vs royal purple" that is pretty interesting. Definetely worth reading. I just recently changed out my tranny and differential fluid to Mobil1 and personally I'm not all that impressed. I'm thinking of changing to RoyalPurple, a friend of mine was running Redline in both tranny and diff (non-lsd) and said when he drained the fluid after a year the tranny fluid was a dark brown and the diff fluid still looked pretty new...
