Fill plug for auto. tranny?

My transmission fluid is way above the F on the dipstick. I tried to drain some out so it was in between the F and the L, and there was a burning smell and what seemed to be the clutch slipping when i went to leave. so i filled it up back to where it was (way above the F) and it worked fine. I have a 91' N/A auto., do i have the wrong dipstick maybe(BTW it has an orange dot on the top of it)? Or just to be sure is there a fill plug on the auto. tranny that could let me see if its full that way?

how are you checking the fluid? level surface, hot, cold, off, or running in park???

Bob Boberson 02-15-06 07:52 PM

Did it cold and from park. can i heat it up by just running the engine?

always check the auto trans while Warm(normal operating temp)..in Park..it only takes one quart to go from Low to Full on the dipstick(so add a bit, check).you add ATF through the dipstick tube..(funnel is your friend)..DextronII is the type of ATF..

auto's don't have a "clutch". cycle through the gears with the engine running ending in park and then measure with the stick.

how did you drain it out? you would have had to syphon it thru the fill tube or remove the pan...

on the bright side, if you destroy it you have a good excuse to do a manual swap.

start it up warm it up. stop run it through the gears with the brake on, put it in park turn it off and check within 20 seconds

WRONG, ATF level is checked with the vehicle RUNNING while in park.
This is why I posted the questions. Most people don't know how to read their owners manual or the factory service manual.

Warm the fluid up with a 1/2 hour ride, find a level parking spot, move the shifter from P to L and back again(5 seconds in each gear), and then check the ATF level while in park and with the vehicle running!

No wonder why there are so many blown auto's.

well that and they're made from dog shit...

What do you expect from any automatic that has 20years of use, never been maintained, and doesn't have the correct fluid level?????

misterstyx69 02-16-06 07:39 PM

info from the manual..wow ..the manual is wrong..edit note..forgot to put while running..my bad,,

Bob Boberson 02-17-06 12:42 AM

i checked after it was warm, and its the same. way above the f and working fine

Bob Boberson 02-17-06 12:45 AM

i drained it through the pan first, then siphoned some out
