FD alternators
 

Doesn't look like the FD boys know! so here goes again

Just wanted to ask you boys if there are any differences in any of the FD alternators, like the s4 is to s5 of the FC series... because i'm looking to buy new pieces for my alternator such as a diode bridge, brushes and whattnot.... What most commonly fails in these alternators?

any help would be appreciated!

I found parts for FD alternators from I think it was called.. Black dragon. Victoria british I think made the name. Just go to victoria british.com and look for the rx7 cataloge. I found that parts cost as much as a brand new one.

I also found that some FD alts have a slightly different front cover then others. I dont know what years though. I will see if I can find my pics I took.

If you wire up your alt correctly and use the right sized pulley. You shouldn't have any problems. The alternator should last 10+ years.

Thanks viper dude... I have already installed the alternator, but i think it just needs to be rebuilt, or have new brushes thrown in it, because it has a problem charging... when i start the car the voltmeter drops to zero.... then i rev it up a bit then the alt comes alive! Maybe i should just replace the battery first.

If the voltmeter is dropping to zero, there is some other problem.

If you have a charged battery in the car the voltmeter should read at least 12.5 volts, even without the engine running.

A voltmeter dropping to zero means you have a connection problem on your gauges (probably a corroded contact screw on the back of gauges).

If you installed that FD alternator in your FC (S4), did you change the load sensing circuitry? If not, you are going to burn that alt up.

The load sensing circuit? I wired it according to silver rotors diagram... bought a new plug and wired it correctly, the alternator has been running correctly for the last year but i bought the alternator used so it could be time for a rebuild.. I will check the connections icemark, i had thought of the same thing, but thought it might be reading the alternator output
