fd alternator on fc s4
 

so , for the longest while i was running an s5 alternator on my s4 . i upgraded to an s6 (fd) alternator, which does have the same clip on it. so it was plug and play.

issue is. the fd alternator sits way to far forward. and it needs spacers to fill the gap between the mount point.

i have been having issues lining up the pully, so the pully is inline with the others. i have been having issues, i threw out the bearings on my alternator, i believe the bearings went out because of the alignment with the other pullies.

i have already replaced the bearings, i am installing this alternator and i just dont feel right about this alignment.

please tell me how you fit your fd alternator on your s4 fc. hasto be an s4 engine, the s5 has a slightly different mount (requiring spacers on an s4 to fill the gap on the main mount)

Whats wrong with spacing it out with some spacers or whatever you have that will work?

You know, all I did was mount my S6 alternator in my S4 using the stock S4 Alternator spacer and I've not had a bearing problem ever. And I've been running an S6 alternator in it for about 4 years.

Interestingly, I have been having occasional bearing problems with the S6 alternator in my S5. There shouldn't be an alignment problem all considered, but from this observation I'll take a closer look. I've been running lifetime warranty O'Reilly rebuilds in the S5. But so easy to swap out, and nothing out of my wallet each time, never worried about it.

yeah. with a warranty i wouldnt worry either only i dont have one . yet..... i might buy a new one if i keep having issues (other issues not listed here)


this alternator sits about 1/2 inch back to far and the belt leans back. idk if its caused my bearing issue or not..... but i am having issues. i did have to have bearings replaced once so far.

How about putting the S4 spacer in the front rather than the rear? That would seem to move it forward about 1/2 inch.

yeah when i get the alternator back from the shop to fix it again, i'll try that. before, i had a dual fd pully on it that just wasnt working no matter where that s4 spacer was. but i didnt have enough time to really mess with it before i dropped the alternator back off.

im just trying to get a feel for what other people have done to get an fd alternator to work on their fc.

Rather than screw with the alternator bracket location...
Look at where the pulley is on the alternator.Too close to the casing.Get a bushing(spacer) put in between the pulley and the alt and then that would bring the pulley out far enough to line up the belts.
My Fd alt fit fine and lines up perfect also.

bushing one side, grind the other side if necessary

i think the issue is the alternator.

first it sat too far forward, then it sat 1/2" too far back. which is it? the alternator pulley dimension placement is the same as the S4 and S5 alternators. place the S4 spacer at the rear leg of the alternator and call it a day because that is how it is supposed to sit. if it's eating bearings then perhaps you are tensioning the belt too tight.

well for me its because of the pulleys I am using, but regardless some people use different alternators and the procedure for shimming is the same
