fc5s shift knob to a fc3s...didnt work

hey guys,

so i wanted to change the shift knob of the '89 GTU cause its was more than peeling of and looking bad, to a '87 series shift knob.

unfortunate they don't swap directly cause the '89 GTU is smaller.

any ideas on how i can get my '87 knob on the '89 GTU shifter without changing the whole shifter???

do they sell something to make smaller thread pattern to big an adapter or something

thanks

sorry for the poor cam quality

You're trying to put an s5 knob (m10x1.25) on an S4 shifter (m12x1.50)?

Only ways I can think of doing it is swapping the s5 shifter over, enlarging the hole on the knob, or cutting the s4 threads down at a machine shop/tap and die.

yea actually wanted the s4 knob on the s5.

do u think adding tephon tape will work or the thread pattern is different?

Teflon tape isn't going to anything. The threads are different. Leave the knob alone or switch shifters.

dude... the shifter is soo easy to swap.

the shifter is 3 bolts. so unless your s5 is a short model then why mess about?

Swap shifters.

will an fc3s shifter fit on an fc5s though?

Turbo II Rotor 01-14-10 05:06 PM

Only if you use a Fc4s transmission.

Yes. tephon tape will definitely work. The problem is it is extremely hard to find. I just searched on McMaster-Carr's site and they are out of stock on it. Most people will try to sell you Teflon tape. Do not do this. You need genuine tephon tape. I would scour eBay for the next few weeks - it sometimes shows up there.

About seven hundred fifty three wraps, give or take, will do the trick.

As others have stated, your only other option would be to find an fc4s transmission. Good luck! You are on the right track.

Come On people!..
the Series 4 shifter has a Bigger thread(12x1.5).The Series 5(S5) has a small thread.(12x1.25)
the Best Solution is to just find a S4 Shifter,.The WHOLE shifter..with the Knob on it..
Don't do it Half-assed and adapt it,.It doesn't make sense..unnecessary work.(adapter would need to be metric.and I haven't seen one.)
The Physical characteristics of the Shifters are the same,so it won't really feel different IN the Transmission,it will only Feel 'different" in your Hand.(different style knob).

Saw the title, let thread marinate, came back to actually read it and got some grade A sarcastic entertainment from it. Thanks guys, I needed the chuckle.
