Fc oil cooler delete
 

Hi, im wondering if i can delete my oil cooler. I have researched but nothing came up. And yes i did look in the forums and shit. But is it a good idea to delete it? I have seen a lot of drag racing cars with the hose connected from the front iron to the rear iron. Is this recommended? The reason is for more space, cleaner engine bay, and my oil cooler has a hole.

Is your car a dedicated drag racer?
If so, go right ahead.
If not, it's suicide for any sort of street driven rotary.
The oil cooler provides a significant percentage of the cooling for your rotary engine and rotaries need all the cooling they can get, so find another cooler and install it.

But even the gsl se came like that even the 12a

So did the Ford Pinto.
Do you have any of those models?

Unless it's only driven for a few moments at a time at the drag strip, you'll need an oil cooler..

As far as I know all RX-7's had an oil cooler of some sort. The early 1st gen. cars had one similar to ours. The '84-'85 cars IIRC had one under the oil filter that connected to the coolant from the cooling system running through it. It didn't work very well from what I understand. Not sure which style the GSL-SE had but it had one of the two.

They had the "beehive" cooler (watercooled) and a bigger radiator.
If you want to delete the oil cooler you are mad.

id just buy another one. like everyone has said its suicide. their pretty cheap on ebay. quality is unknown never knew anyone who used one.

I have several if you need one.

Alot of serious drag racers run an external line from the front to rear iron to bypass the oil passage through the upper dowels.

So that if they break a rear iron on the strip,
they dont lose all there oil, oil down the track, or risk oiling there tires and crashing. Basicly allowing you to finish the pass.

The oil cooler is 40% of your cooling system.

A lot of drag cars do not have radiators, for that matter. When you are only running for a few seconds with 40-80 minutes between runs, you do not need a cooling system.

Only the '83-85 12A, all other cars had an enormous oil cooler.

The oil cooler on a 100hp 12A is the same size as an FC's cooler...

That doesn't look like it has any provision for an oil thermostat. Heck it doesn't even look like it is divided. But hey it is only $64, it's worth the gamble of destroying an engine for which new parts are not available and used engines in good shape are extremely hard to find. (sarcasm)

Maybe you are rich enough to see risking $5k+ is worth saving a few bucks on an oil cooler. I sure as hell am not.

(waiting for someone to come in and say they can buy good used engines all day long for $1000. I'll buy five of them at that price!)
