FC engine detonation kill stories!

Detonation is a big cause of engine death as we all know with the turbo FC's. So I want to hear from those that have had detonation occur (ping of death ;) exactly what happened.

Im just curious, but give specifics, what boost you were running, what rpm you were at, what exactly blew? Do any of you guys have stories where you actually blew a hole in the housing wall? the more crazy the better!

Also, can the NA detonate if it overheats?

thx for your replys.

I might have one if I don't tune it soon :)

Ahh the ping of death. Here type this into the command promp "ping 127.0.0.1 -t" to get the ping of death, sunny ;)

A few years back I wasnt thinking so clearly one night, and after doing some ill advised late night work on the t2, I went for a test drive, several WOT runs back to back, 0-100mph or so. The car ran damn well until it hesitated for about 1 full second, maybe 2. Just enough to alert you that something was wrong...felt like a hose came off under boost. Let off, got back in it slowly, no power. Buuuuuurrrrrr.....

I limp it home knowing exactly what happened, and I was pissed the hell off. It didnt make sense...then I remembered. The fucker had no hood. Dammit.

ON rotaries, you usually can NOT hear detonation, even a little. You can feel it, that's usually about it.

So what happened? apex seal blew out?

I don't think im gonna find to many personal detonation storys, so I'll add another question.

-Whats the worst blown engine that you've seen? Im talking real physical damage on the internals.

I blew up my first motor with detonation last september.

was at maybe 110MPH, near the top of 4th gear, was running GREAT and super fast, best the engine had EVER ran, look over at the boost gauge and it says 17PSI, JUST as I do that the car hesitates BAD, I let off the throttle and all is OK... till I hit the throttle again. then it made the BURRRRRRR sound that the ones with 5 good apex seals make..

pulled the motor, one of the apex seals was broken right in half, with half of it missing.

The engine in my 1988 GTU probably went because of detonation; apex seals on the front rotor went without warning one October day. When I had my fuel injectors cleaned I found out that the primaries were the wrong impedence, 3Ohms vs. the correct 13 Ohm.

How I was able to run low-impedence injectors on a high-impedence CPU without frying it (since at least May 2001 till October 2003) I don't know. However, I put in a pair of 10 Ohm resistors when I rewrapped my ECU harness and all was right with the world once everything was back together and running again (courtesy of a rebuilt engine by Mr. Landers; nearly 1500 miles now and still running good).

I was racing a Mustang GT that was purging his bottle at me. We were both rolling at about 30mph, so I push in the clutch lay the car on the 2step (5750rpm limiter) and build up about 7psi, and dumped the clutch. I left 2 nice ass black stripes and by the time I hit 3rd I was long gone from the Mustang. Oops, car had less than 1/8 of a tank of gas, and now had a small bump at idle. 2 weeks later it had a LARGE bump at idle.

I chipped all 3 rear apex seals. All in the same place.

I have also had 2 motor sieze on me, one from a bad oil pump in a mazda reman (just out of warranty) and one after 300 miles that I missbuilt the front cover. These 2 by far were the worst destroyed. The Mazda reman walked the front rotor bearing ouf othe rotor and cocked the rotor sideways till the corners of the rotor hit the side plates. E-shaft was bent, front and rear housings were gouged as well as the rotor housing.

The one I missbuilt, I assembled the front cover wrong, and something got chewed up and deposited itself right on the front stationary gear bearing. The e-shaft and rotorbearing siezed together. Don't ever try to assemble a motor from memory, I have built/helped built ALOT of these motors, but it was all 6 years ago. This motor was the first I built in forever. Oops.

oh shit  I have an 88 TII that has 720's in without resisters and it didn't fry the ecu......I have always wondered why they work and I believe you have answered my question. Can anyone tell me what is going on with this???

RotaryResurrection 11-22-04 12:38 PM

IT's damn hard, near impossible, to detonate an NA engine without way advanced timing, boost, or nitrous. IF an NA engine breaks, it was likely due to wear. A t2 engine can break at light to no load as well, due just to wear.

cluosborne 11-22-04 03:28 PM

What if it was running lean?

BlaCkPlaGUE 11-28-04 07:29 AM

nice storys! heh.. not as crazy as I was hoping, I was guessing along the lines of

"Yea, so I was redlining it becuase I miss-shifted and all of a sudden *BANG* and I hear this metal screetching coming from the hood and clanging and scraping. Right as I heard that my friend in the passenger seat was like 'AHHHHHHHHHH' and I looked over and he had pieces of shrapnel in his face! I was freaking out so we pulled over and the inside of the car was all up in smoke, thick black smoke was everywhere. I couldn't see but I just opened the door and crawled out, hearing my friend screaming in the background I ran around to the other side and pulled him out too.
Blood was everywhere but I told him to hang on, cause I was gonna call the ambulance on my cell.
Just then, these asians came up on bikes, they had nice r6's and these cool 'bike packs' and were looking at my car that was smoking. One of them said
'nice car, someone put in alot of wrench time'
and I was like
"who the hell are you???"
and he said
"so, its nobodys car?"
then he pulled out a silenced uzi and him and his buddy in snake skin leather pants shot at my car unloading their clips! I just sat there stunned with my friend at my side holding his face and I suddenly shouted
"NAWS!!!!" and we both ran and the car exploded.

Moral of the story.. don't miss-shift cause it can cause detonation

yea its late and i need some sleep...
