FC Clutch Replacement
 

Hi Guys,
Im going to try & pull my clutch this wkend to sus it out. Its got a semi solid centre brass button in it & lately it been starting to deteriorate. So im going to pull it out 7 have a look at the condition of things. PLus the spiggot bearing is on the way out & makes an annoying noise when under any load.
Any tips/advice? This is my 1st time, so if any of you guys can remember any hurdles you faced it'd be appreciated.

get friends. like, 2 more people minimum. this will make you life easier. the worst part is trying to line your trans back up, without scratching your new clutch disc and PP while shoving the 100 lbs trans back in there. its a pain to say the least. my last time went quick though, with 2 strong friends to help, and considering its the 6th clutch job ive done, they get quicker with experience.

My father inlaw is a mechanic & said i can use his garage with hoist whilest hes away on holidays...yay
He's got a stand that he puts gas tanks on & then jacks them up underneath in place for gas conversions in utes. Im hoping i can use this to hold & lower the trans.
Unfortunately i need to do it this wkend, & all my mates are busy

Utes are so cool. i wish we had them in the states (you know, besides the El camino)
yeah, you might want to pick up a few random dudes off the street to help you then, cause its a pain by yourself (like, maybe not gonna happen)

USE THE CORRECT BEARING PULLER!!!!!!

Don't foget the two bolts right next to each other at the top and a friend will come in handy.

Mark where the rear flange of the driveshaft bolts to the rear end. Reinstall with the marks lined up.

Support the rear of the engine before unbolting the transmission crossmember. I used a floor jack with a piece of wood under the rear of the oil pan. Let it drop down a little and it will make it easier to reinstall the trans.

Make sure you remove the pilot bearing and install a new one. Are you able to rent tools from the parts store? They should have a bearing puller available.

Make sure you have a clutch alignment tool to line up the clutch disc before you tighten down the pressure plate.

Grease the pilot bearing and the input shaft tip of the trans before installing.

If the trans doesn't slide in on the first try, keep trying. It will go back together. This is where the mate would help. The trans gets heavy after a while.

Im hoping my father in law has alot of the tools ill need. If not i guess ill find out this wkend so i can buy them next week.
I may be able to get some help re-installing the trans, i think ill need it hey.

Is the bearing puller likely to be a specific type thing to this job, or would it be like a generic style tool that most mechaincs should have?

Is the pilot bearing the same as the spiggot bearing?

That seems like a great price, cant find anything here under $300 AUD

yeah, the tool is generic, sometimes called a "blind hole bearing puller"

takes me a few hours by myself using a normal floorjack to raise and lower the trans.

for reinstallation wedge a block of wood under the front cover so the motor tilts down in the rear, will make it much easier to line up.

I got the clutch out yesterday arvo. My father in law had a trans lifter, so with that & his car hoist it was a breeze.

Ive just found a OS Giken super single clutch & flywheel with approx 1500kms on it for about half the price of the 5 puk brass button semi solid centre with lightened billet flywheel i was planing on buying.
Any advice on which one i should go for? Obvisouly new is going to be slightly better in condition, but if the OS Giken single will be better than the brass button then it guess its a bargain.

I ended up getting this button clutch setup for good price (about $300AUD less than the nearest price with lightened flywheel)
