I'm currently boosting my streetported 12a. I bought a used s4 turbo and mani. There is so much extra junk on there....what is all of it? Also, it came with this BOV what kind is it? Is it a good one?

:hops in flame suit: I don't know how you guys take to FB around here

From the pictues it sorta looks like one of the turboXS BOV (that and it says it on top). I'm not sure which one, but you can check it out at corksport (http://www.corksport.com) to get info on different models.

A service manual would probably help to identify everything.

It's a cheap TurboXS Type-S BOV, but it should work just fine as long as you are running your engine with speed-density EFI. A blow-through carb or MAF/AFM EFI requires a bypass valve for best results.

Most 2Gen owners like the 1Gen RX-7. However, you may get flamed if you think that you have even the most remote chance of successfully getting this turbo to work on your engine if you are asking such incredibly basic questions. ;)

Thanks for the help.

Whan I said I was currently boosting the 12a SP, I'm really just int he R&D stage, I'm researching and gathering materials. All i know is how a turbo works and what i need to turbo a Carb. What i don't know are good combinations of Turbo/BOV/wastegate. What do you recomend for a 12a with an S4 turbo? What are some good wastegates and BOVs. I don't know if i'm going to re-route the exhaust gas from the BOV back into the intake quite yet, I might just use the one I got for free (pictures above). So I don't think a bypass will be absolutley critical to this project. Well, anyway...thanks for all the help!

The "extra junk" on the S4 manifold is likely the twin scroll and associated actuator. Look like a big silver can at the front of the manifold? If so, then just pull it off. Snap off the little flapper door in the manifold by hitting the exterior lever with a hammer. Now tap the hole, and install a bolt. You probably don't want to mess with having to design a twin scroll control system.

As for wastegates, the stock turbos have internal wastegates. While you CAN modify them for external, if you are going that far, you should probably look at a different turbo and custom build a manifold.

As for venting your BOV, it's just easier to vent it to the atmosphere.

Blow-through or draw-through?

Rotofire 01-29-05 05:16 PM

Blow through. Thanks Cake.

On a good side note, I pulled the donor engine to get rebuilt and SPed today!

Oh good, I thought you were going to blow up your engine with a draw-through carb and vented BOV, lol.

I think a re-routed bypass valve would stabilize the system better, but I guess you could try the BOV and see how it works. After all, the BOV was free.

There's nothing to design, you just copy the original set-up. All you need is a solenoid valve (one of the emission ones or any other 3-port valve), a one-way valve and an adjustable rpm switch. It would be very easy to do if you wanted to. It's not necessary, but it does make the turbo perform better (i.e. less lag).

Rotofire 01-29-05 09:15 PM

yea, I'd like less lag, but I'll wait until I have more experince before I start worrying about rerouting the excess gas from the BOV.

What are some good aftermarket manifolds and turbo combos?

Also, how much do 13b oil pumps run? I need one ASAP! (one that's out of a FB 13b)
