Fan question
 

Ok i have a question about fans, im still running the clutch fan in my s5 and normally dont have any temp problems, but if im sitting stationary with the a/c on the temp slowly starts to creep up. I was thinking of putting a thermo fan in front of the radiator, and just running it off a switch (was also gonna use it after i shut it down if i wanted it to cool down faster) but was told by a mate this wont work, he couldnt explain it but said he read it somewhere, any ideas on how to fix this problem?

The stock car is supposed to have a small electric fan for use when the A/C is turned on.

So you could use a small electric fan and then activate it with the compressor clutch wire (through a relay).

Yeah it already does have a small fan under there, and im 90% sure it works. Would upgrading it to a bigger one work?

just thought i throw it in there, the small stock fan doesnt do much when it is on and the car is off. I have had it on for well over 5 min after the car has been turned off, and my coolant temp doesnt drop at all. (this is from my own personal experience tho)

You can use a pusher type E-fan..I have used one for almost 8 years and I always turn it on after every run @ the track and while waiting in line for my next run down the track.

I will say it cools down everything very fast..compared to nothing...

but it you already have a stock setup, you may have other issues..if the engine is getting to hot..hope that helps..

yea when I am on the highway my car will climb about 5 degrees because the clutch fan is no longer on and a good amount of air flow is blocked by the intercooler so I am debating putting a push fan in front of the radiator in addition to stock clutch fan with a switch.

Long story short... I am also wondering if this is a good idea.

I thoguht the E fan was an option, did all of them come with one? My vert only has a belt driven fan.

I believe they were installed in all cars that have A/C.

That little aux fan works fairly well. I've had the mechanical fan off with no fan shroud, and idled the car until the temps climb up over 207* whereupon the little fan comes on and the temps on the gauge actually do drop down from 207*. That's just at idle not reving the sucker up and down etc.

all the FCs I have had have been NA, have AC, and did not have a fan.

I think the turbo cars might have had that fan because the 87 TII I had had a small fan in addition to the clutch fan

if the temp climbs a little bit and your 2 fans are working properly- I would just learn to deal with it as things are as they should be

When the car is off the water pump isn't running so the cooler coolant from the radiator isn't going anywhere... the temperature sensor is in the water pump housing, so I'm not surprised it didn't drop.

I would probably just replace your radiator with a performance oriented one instead of adding fans.

1) A/C adds a lot of (heat) load to the cooling system due to the condensor core getting rid of heat for the A/C system itself.

2) The stock, viscous fan does not fully lock up until some higher temp level - something like 230F?

The stock auxiliary electric fan is a piece of shit for trying to cool the FC under demanding conditions.

And again, I feel like a broken record...
We don't know what your actual temps are.
GET AN AFTERMARKET WATER TEMP GAUGE TO GIVE US A NUMBER.
These gauges are cheap and no excuse.

i got a fan from napa, the flex lite fane, it works really good, the price is kinda high, but i think its worth it.

Under normal conditions (no boost) I drove around w/ no fan at all and temps never rose above 205. They really only got anywhere near that at stop lights. Then again I didn't have a fmic.....

205 is pretty hot. Operating temperature of the car is 86 degrees C, or 186 degrees F. 205 is overheating in my books.

I would like to hear from anyone running the following what thier temps are on the highway and stop and go:

FMIC, AC, Koyo or other thicker then stock radiator, and if you are running electric or stock clutch fan

im seeing 180s with the fan coming on in the high 180s, and 190-200 with a little spirited driving on the highway
