faint low whirring sound when clutch in pushed in.
 

Have an '88 13B stock convertible, is this the throwout bearing going? Hear a faint low whirring sound when clutch in pushed in. Clutch seems good, no slipping, shifts nice. If so will this get worse real quick, can I wait until it gets worse, car is barely a weekend driver.

You already know what is wrong.. just replace it.. It will last long time if you go easy on it...

Some cars will last for years with a whining throwout bearing. But when it does "go" your car won't! It is probably the easiest part to change if you have the tranny off. But if you're taking out the tranny, might as well change the seals and the clutch and everything else while you're at it.

Come to think of it; I hate removing the tranny! Seems like you have to replace every god damned thing under there just because you have the tranny of and "might as well change it." But you know the first time you take that sucker off of there and don't change the front seal, it will go bad three days later.

I need a vacation! :)

Front seals do not need replaced everytime to take the trans out...

Just check them and make sure they still are plyble and not ripped and look new...


If they didn't leak they won't after the install, unless you fuck it up..

Had a friend with a whinning throw out bearing and he didn't fix it for like 3 months. Then it seized and ripped some of the fingers out of his pressure plate. So then it cost him $150 to fix rather than $20. Just fix it and move on.

I had the same thing happen to me, execpt when my throwout bearing when out it gave me like 3 sec to shift then it would engage, did seem to have damaged my clutch or Pressure plate though. I went ahead and changed my clutch and pressure plate along with all the seals in the trasmission. I would hate to take off the tranny just for a throwout bearing, might as well get a new clutch if it's about time or if you exepect it to go out soon.

uhm, what if your tranny whines all the time EXCEPT when you have the pedal in?

The bearings in the tranny are going...Will need to be replaced soon

Probably a bearing(s) in transmission. When you disengage the clutch, push pedal down, the input shaft on the trans stops turning, therefore bearing growl disappears.
