Failed emissions here's my numbers help.
 

Took my 87 TurboII for emissions today and failed. I bought the car used so I have no clue how long the car has been in emissions non compliance since it came from VW. Here's my numbers passed the Cat inspection and passed Evap test. Here are the ASM numbers...

HC 271.9 174.0
CO 0.64 1.12
NO 760.9 1258.0
CO2 13.87

The numbers on the right are Ohio's limit and the numbers on left are mine... As you can see I only failed the HC. Any help I'd appreaciate it otherwise I may consider getting collectors tags.

High Hydrocarbon levels are usually due to bad cats so just replace them and you chould be good

theres a guy selling a bonez high flow cat in the f/s section

My stock exhaust right at the Y pipes both pipes have small crimps in them from the previous owner runnign somethign over. Could this restriction cause higher readings?

Unless it damaged the cats, then no.

I just purchased a hi flow bonez cat replacement will this cause fuel cut to kick in on a stock car?

whats the O2 reading ? if its close to 0% your cats are fine if its high(ie. 1%) its not doing its job your co2 should be closer to 15% if its running good check your timing plugs and you should be good

The numbers are very close to passing.
Unless the HC numbers are like 1000+, then I would suspect the cat is dead.

Has the car gotten a tune up recently?
Replace spark plugs...
Replace spark plug wires...
Change engine oil...
Change air filter...
All of that actually helps.

Also, run the car HARD and get it hot just prior to taking the car in for testing.
Getting everything hot allows the cat(s) to work more efficiently.

Since it's also an '87 model, jack the "R" / "L" screw all the way to "L" as possible while still being able to idle.
This will lean out the idle air / fuel mixture to help.
Adjust the TPS to within spec.
Check ignition timing to factory spec.

Once all of this is done, I'd be pretty confident that car will pass.

I just had ordered my new plugs and wires so I'll have those in but I also have a brand new K&N cone filter and I also will be changing the oil this coming Thursday.

you know i had the same problem were starting emissions down here in austin,tx and i was trainning on the machine so i hooked my car up well lets just say you already know so i start to lean it out to see if the numbers would change well they got worse so i start to richin it sure enough it passed course this was on a n/a so that may not help

Before you go the effort and cost of replacing the cats make sure the airpump and the Air Control Valve circuit is working correctly!

My friend had the same problem and this was the solution.
