F*ckin smoke... please help
 

I know there's a million threads like this one floating around, but no one seems to have given a clear answer. Upon start-up my car smokes like the "mesquito truck.." Some of you might know what that means.. for those of you that don't... it means that she smokes terribley. Sometimes it lasts through the duration of the ride, sometimes it stops after a few real hard rev's and a few minutes of running. Seems to depend on the day. From various threads I have gathered that:

Blue smoke - oil
black smoke - fuel
white smoke - coolant

however, I don't seem to be losing any coolant... it smells VERY bad... like... exhaust..? I know it's a terrible way to describe it, and that's what it is.. but you know when someone's v8 is running sh!tty and it smells like oil and whatnot, that's what she smells like.

I know I've got some pretty rugged exhaust leaks throughout the system, holes in piping and looks like the exhaust manifold is shot... but this is ridiculous. That still doesn't explain all the s m o k e that is e v e r y w h e r e!

Like I said, I don't seem to be losing coolant, and I really need some help with this.

Oh, the motor I'm talking about is an N/A s4.

It's not imperative that I fix this due to the fact that I'm dropping my t2 in it.. but I would like to use the motor for another application... or something. Plus, I just hate for things to be broken, and I don't want to leave this problem unfixed...

start the engine cold and run it for about a minute then shut it off, remove the spark plugs and inspect all of them, if you have any that are soaking wet in oil then plan for a rebuild cause your oil control o-rings are shot.

alright, thanks... hopefully that isn't the case.

It could also just be his exhaust. I know mine was real stinky after some hard driving, but my cats were shot and slightly clogged, I had nothing but that sulfur smell coming from the back of my car. I fixed the problem by just removing the cats :)

But really, we need to know what color your smoke is, whether or not it smokes under throttle or on throttle lift, how good the motor runs and stuff like that.

he said it is quite bad on startup, this means either a lot of coolant in the exhaust or oil in the engine. if the plugs come out with oil or even water on them then that points to a problem in the engine.
